On fine Spring evening, Plymouth Laira allocated Metro-Cammell Class 101 set number 827 formed of cars 53212, 59130 & 51223, was departing from the Down Loop at Dawlish Warren whilst working the 20.04 Exeter Central to Paignton all stations service (2C04) on June 1st 1990. Martyn Hilbert.

A tidy looking three-car Class 101 DMU leaning into the curve as it departed from Dawlish with the 18.20 Exeter St Davids to Newton Abbot (all stations) service on a glorious Saturday evening, May 26th 1990. W51500 leads, the TBS should be W59093 and an unknown DMBS on the rear. This set was one of many Class 101 & 108 units sent to the West Country as a stop-gap following the transfer of the Devon & Cornwall Class 142 'Skipper' fleet to the North in 1988, and before the transfer of almost new Class 150/2 Sprinter units in 1992. A three-car Class 101 DMU formed of cars 53157, 59093 & 51500 (829) was arriving at Starcross with the 16.35 Paignton to Exeter Central service on May 30th 1990. The 101 was one of several first generation DMU's transferred to Plymouth Laira following the demise of the Class 142 'Skipper' fleet in the West Country. Many sets were cobbled together until sufficient Class 150/2 Sprinters became available. Martyn Hilbert.

Class 101 53305, set number 829, is seen at Plymouth on 10.08.1992. Note the plate on the front where the headlight had been removed, and the RETB bracket from its Norwich days. Andy Cole.
The cab of 53305 is in need of a repaint when seen at Kirkcaldy in 1993. The rear DMBS is on the set appears to be receiving attention, and NSE liveried set 991 is attached behind. Andrew McConnell.
On 12/7/93, set 829 (53305/59118/51246) is seen stabled in platform 18 at Waverley station. 53305 is nearest to the camera. Behind 829 and fairly much out of sight is set 991 (53308/59125/53331). Later they will form the 17.27 to Perth via Cardenden and Ladybank. During Spring and Summer 1993, Haymarket had a handful of Laira and Reading hand-me-downs at work – another was 53315/59115/53330 – along with its quartet of refurbished cl.101 triples (101 691-4), mainly on Fife peak hour workings like this. By the end of the year, they were all gone, superseded by the refurbished cl.117’s let go by Tyseley once the Cross City line electrification was finally complete. Leonard Rogers.
