Typical of the period, the train shows a mismatch of Refurbished and Blue + Grey Livery. Unfortunately, the attractive Refurbished Livery was found to get dirty rather quickly, so it was decided to outshop refurbished vehicles in Blue + Grey livery, which had previously been for Inter-City / Cross-Country vehicles only. In this view, 56089 also carries the logo of Tyne & Wear PTE within the blue band, as well as a tail lamp. The unit was working the 10.09 Preston to Ormskirk service and was running along one of the surviving platforms (complete with its derelict buildings, and rear goods shed in industrial use), that closed in 1961. With much development having taken place nearby since the 1980's, there has been an active ongoing campaign to have the station re-opened here. Martyn Hilbert.

The DMBS has had a continuous gutter fitted. George Woods.
A WYPTE refurbished Metro-Cammell Class 101 DMU with Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory (DTCL) car E56220 leading, was running ECS from Marsden on the East side of the 3 Mile 60 Yard Standedge Tunnel, and was approaching the signal box at Diggle, in readiness to cross over to the Up line to return ECS to Marsden from where it would form a service to Huddersfield on August 11th 1979. This was common practice at the time, track rationalisation at Marsden station had removed any crossovers for terminating DMU services, and subsequently they had to travel to Diggle to cross over for the return journey. A third bi-directional platform has since been added at Marsden. Martyn Hilbert.
