BR ran a series of 'Rail-Cruises' over the freight only Churnet Valley lines during the early 1980s - the line is now in the hands of the Churnet Valley Railway, though here the CVR is still fenced-off from the 'main line' which was still in use for sand trains from Oakamoor (note the sand between the tracks which was in evidence from Oakamoor to Stoke's Cockshute yard!). M56156 at the front of an eight-car formation for the Machynlleth-Towyn section of a BSRS (Bristol Suburban Railway Society) Cambrian Special railtour at Machynlleth on 10 August 1980. The tour started in Bristol with loco-hauled stock, 47 185 took it to Shrewsbury then 25 056 + 25 327 on to Machynlleth. At Machynlleth passengers transferred to the DMU. Nicholas T Smith.

This Park Royal class 103 D.M.U. DTCL M56157 was withdrawn in November 1980 from Chester depot. By mid 1982 the windows and doors had been covered with plywood from the inside. Somewhere between those dates I photographed it at this unknown location. It was cut up in June 1984. Curly42.
The rear end of a twelve-car DMU on a Llandudno to Rochdale and Oldham holiday relief at Heyside sometime in 1981. The formation was, from this end, a two-car Class 103, two two-car Class 101s, a Class 100 DMBS / Class 108 DTC, and two two-car 108s. Richard Greenwood.
