18th February 1985

A Class 104 DMU set at Southport on 18/02/85. Before the route became "modernised" with class 142 Pacer railcars services on the Manchester to Southport line were invariably in the hands of 2 and 3-car class 104 DMU sets based at Newton Heath. Here a 2-car set sits filling the station with fumes prior to departure with train 2J18 the 14.10 to Manchester Victoria. Adrian Nicholls.

Scuttling down the 1 in 60 decent between Disley and Hazel Grove with a Buxton-Manchester Piccadilly service, is Buxton based BRC&W class 104 dmu (M53507, M59149, unknown DMBS) seen as it heads towards the short Middlewood Tunnel which takes the railway underneath the Macclesfield Canal. 9th March 1985. A sudden and unexpected flurry of snow fell in West Lancashire on the late afternoon of March 16th 1985. Within a couple of hours it had all thawed. Class 104 M53530 & M53468 was on a Preston to Ormskirk working passing Cocker Bar, between Midge Hall and Croston. Despite the destination blind, the unit was heading for Ormskirk. In the field to the left of the DMU is a derelict vintage Thames Trader lorry that was in production from 1957 to 1965. Martyn Hilbert.

Awaiting departure from Platform 4 at Glasgow Queen Street station on the 5th April 1985 is Ayr allocated Class 104 set 367 formed of DMCL 53510, TBSL 59210 & DMCL 53565. All arrived in Scotland from the Manchester area during early 1984. Their stay was fairly brief as all three were scrapped at Vic Berry's yard in Leicester during July 1986. Bob Woolnough.
