16th March 1985

A sudden and unexpected flurry of snow fell in West Lancashire on the late afternoon of March 16th 1985. Within a couple of hours it had all thawed. Class 104 M53530 & M53468 was on a Preston to Ormskirk working passing Cocker Bar, between Midge Hall and Croston. Despite the destination blind, the unit was heading for Ormskirk. In the field to the left of the DMU is a derelict vintage Thames Trader lorry that was in production from 1957 to 1965. Martyn Hilbert.

A two-car Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53478 & M53530 was passing through snowy West Lancashire farmland, passing Narrow Lane Crossing at Midge Hall with a Preston to Ormskirk service on March 16th 1985. Martyn Hilbert.

A Class 104 TBSL set (53504 + 59228 + 53556) thought to be at Barmoor Clough on the Buxton line, looking north west towards Eaves Tunnel and Chapel-en-le-Frith. The slide process date was April 1985. Stuart Mackay Collection.

Awaiting departure from Platform 4 at Glasgow Queen Street station on the 5th April 1985 is Ayr allocated Class 104 set 367 formed of DMCL 53510, TBSL 59210 & DMCL 53565. All arrived in Scotland from the Manchester area during early 1984. Their stay was fairly brief as all three were scrapped at Vic Berry's yard in Leicester during July 1986. Bob Woolnough.

Buxton based BRC&W class 104 3 car dmu BX485 (M53514, M59228, M53556), climbs the 1-60 bank up towards Disley whilst working a Manchester Piccadilly-Buxton service. These units truly worked nationwide, but it was the Buxton route which they became synonymous with. 9th April 1985. Andrew J Crowther.

104 325 (53434 + 53424) officially known as the 'MEXICAN BEAN' in reference to its colour scheme, seen at Eastfield fresh from a repaint at Cowlairs Carriage Depot on 2/5/85. This unit was used on the Oban line between Oban and Crianlarich as a tourist shuttle. When required at Eastfield for maintenance or returning to Oban it was attached to the rear of a service train. Heading towards Sheffield we have just crossed the freight only Chapel Milton viaduct and are joining the Hope Valley route, under the watchful gaze of the two spotters on the bridge. Our class 108/104 'Merrymaker' is heading for the Flower Parade at Spalding and this freight only line was one of three that we traversed that day. This little freight only spur over Chapel Milton viaduct between Chinley South Junc and Chinley East Junc was closed on 27/2/1966 and lifted only to be restored to use again on 14/12/1980. 4th May 1985 Andrew J Crowther.
