On the bright morning of May 1st 1986, A Class 104 Three-Car DMU (Buxton set BX482) with 53507 leading, was stood on the up fast at Leyland with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria Service. This was a familiar time-honoured scene, the class 104's dominating these services during the 1970's & early 1980's, until ousted by Class 120 Cross-Country units for a short time, prior to the arrival of new Class 150/2 Sprinter Units in 1987/88. In time-honoured fashion, a three-car Class 104 DMU, with Driving Motor Second Lavatory M53556 at the rear, was stood on the Down Fast at Leyland station with a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service on May 16th 1986. M53556 was originally fitted with a First Class saloon, located behind the cab, but by 1986 had been downgraded to Second, although the better seats remained. Martyn Hilbert.
Accelerating along the Up Slow, a BRCW Class 104 two-car DMU formed of cars M53494 & M53468 was about to take the East Lancashire route at Farington Curve Junction with a well-filled Preston to Colne service on May 16th 1986. Martyn Hilbert.

A three-car Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53517, M59168 & M53464 was stood on the Down Fast at Leyland station with a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service on May 16th 1986. Unusually, the centre trailer car (M59168) was in blue/grey livery. M53517 has survived into preservation and is currently at the East Lancashire Railway. Martyn Hilbert.
Class 104 53461, set number 104 452, is seen stabled at Corkerhill on 25.05.1986. This was one of the few Class 104's to be painted into blue and grey, and was also one of the few Class 104's allocated to Scotland. Andy Cole.
