Having taken the East Lancashire route at Farington Curve Junction, a two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53472 & M53500 was accelerating to climb the gradient to nearby Farington Curve, whilst working a Preston to Colne service on May 3rd 1987. Both cars were withdrawn in 1989 and subsequently scrapped by Berry's of Leicester. Martyn Hilbert.

Complete with a discoloured white cab roof, two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU, formed of Driving Motor Brake Second M53431 & Driving Motor Lavatory Second M53512 was stabled between duties in Croft Street Sidings adjacent to Preston Power Box on May 3rd 1987. The well-worn unit was having an extended period of operation due to the sidelining of the then ailing almost new Class 142 Pacer fleet. The unit would become a spare set at Chester Depot in November 1989 due its poor condition until it was officially withdrawn in June 1990, as new Class 150/2 Sprinters began to appear in quantity from BREL York. Class 104 set 457 at Kirkcaldy on 5/5/87, The leading vehicle is M53504. The train is about to leave as a service to Edinburgh. Kenneth Leiper.

Complete with retro Buxton style white cab roof sections, a two-car Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53421 & M53487 was diverging from the Up Slow at Farington Curve Junction with the 18.00 Preston to Ormskirk service on May 6th 1987. Both cars were withdrawn from Newton Heath Depot in 1989 and scrapped by Berry's of Leicester. Martyn Hilbert.

As a Class 86 was heading for London Euston on the Up Fast, a two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53421 & M53487 was joining the Down Slow at Farington Curve Junction with the 17.25 Ormskirk to Preston service on May 6th 1987. The unit was one of many first generation sets given an extended life due to the then ongoing issues with the Class 142 Pacer fleet. Martyn Hilbert.

Complete with bars fitted to the door droplights due to tight clearances inside Holme Tunnel on the Copy Pit route that connects Lancashire with West Yorkshire, a two-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53472 & M53500 was passing Lostock Hall Junction with a Preston to Leeds service on May 7th 1987. Class 104 set 457 enters Falkirk Grahamston station on May 25th 1987. Formed M53556 + M59228 + M53504, it is working the 20:31 to Glasgow Queen Street. Hamish Stevenson.

Mexican Bean Class 104 Sc53434 + Sc53424 is seen in Oban after arriving on the rear of the 18:20 Glasgow - Oban on June 16, 1987. They made this move regularly to Eastfield depot for servicing and fuelling, and were locked out of use for the journey. Hamish Stevenson.

M53453 at Old Old Common circa late 1987. It had been in a collision with 31 281 at Gospel Oak on 21 April, the 31 driven by Peter Boor wrongly directed into the bay after getting a signal for the main. Peter Boor.

On a fine Summer evening, a two-car Class 104 DMU formed of Driving Motor Brake Second M53470 and Driving Motor Second Lavatory M53499, was hurrying along the Up Fast at Factory Lane, Penwortham, just South of Preston on July 6th 1987. The DMU appears to be well-filled, and the destination blind is showing Crewe. It may have been a returning special/charter from Blackpool North. Martyn Hilbert.

Looking north at track level as a 3 car BRC&W dmu 104456 (53464 closest, presumably with 59168 + Class 108 52059) crosses the Forth Bridge, which spans the Firth of Forth in Scotland, the bridge which links Queensferry and Inverkeithing is 8,296 feet long. 8th July 1987. Andrew J Crowther.
