Newton Heath based class 104 2-car DMU set no. N674 (presumably 53474 + 53427) sits in the bay platform at Stalybridge with the local service to Stockport on May 3, 1988. This shot was taken when there was still 16 trains a day each way. It would then become a parliamentry service with one train a week on a Friday in one direction only leaving Stockport at 09.22. By running this token service the railway did not have to go through the lengthy statutory close notice period for a line closure. The route became largely obsolete when the Windsor link line opened in West Manchester. Adrian Nicholls.
Accelerating away from Croston, a two-car BRCW Class 104 formed of M53468 & M53494 (Newton Heath set N673) was passing over the user worked level crossing at Club Lane, as it headed towards its next station call at Rufford with a Preston to Ormskirk service on May 5th 1988. Along with other first generation DMU sets at the time, N673 had an extended period of operation due to problems with the Class 142 fleet. N673 was eventually withdrawn from service in 1989. A Class 104 at Rufford Level Crossing (Ormskirk Line). Having called at Rufford with an Ormskirk to Preston service on May 11th 1988, the Class 104 can be seen in the distance accelerating away to the next stop at Croston, as in time-honoured fashion the traditional timber level crossing gates swing open to let the waiting traffic cross. This scene would be lost forever within six months as the old signalbox and crossing gates would be replaced by a portable cabin and lifting barriers in November 1988. Martyn Hilbert.
With the former goods loading dock ramp in the foreground, a Class 104 2-Car DMU with M53529 leading, departs from Rufford with an Ormskirk to Preston Service on the 11th May 1988. For many years this unit had been a three car set working off Newton Heath Depot on Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North Services. By the time this image was recorded the unit had lost its centre car and was having an extended life as the newly introduced class 142s were starting to have reliability issues. Martyn Hilbert.
