105 DMU

circa late 1970s

Taken at Prudhoe circa late 1970s, the unit had been put into the old coal siding opposite the signal box for some reason the night before. However, the driver managed to hit the buffer stop and push it into the road. This is the unit being recovered the next morning. The vehicle seems to be E56136. Tim Gornall.

105 DMU

circa 1979

A Cravens Class 105 DMU in New Holland Pier station, Lincolnshire, circa 1979. Seen awaiting departure for Barton-upon-Humber, the service probably originated from Cleethorpes. No date with the original slide, but with the other tracks having been lifted and the front end of the DMU having been rationalised, it likely to be between 1979 to June 1981 when the pier station closed upon opening of the Humber Bridge. Graeme Phillips Collection.

Unknown Date

Cravens Class 105 DMBS 50394 awaits it's fate at Derby Litchurch Lane. It has the relatively rare combination of the LM Region headcode box and the stump for mounting a marker light on the roof dome, though no light was ever fitted, unique to the M50390 - 94 batch. It was withdrawn in the mid 1970s after a collision/derailment at Watford Junction that also wiped out M56147 (thanks to Eddie Knorn for info). Undated. Ian Francis.

January 1979

With the paraffin tail lamp moved to the cab front of Motor Brake Second M50764, the Cravens Power-Twin prepares to depart from a Wintery Ormskirk with the 09.19 to Preston in January 1979. During this period the Newton Heath based Class 105s were not common on the Ormskirk Line, the Derby built Class 108s were the normal fare. The weather was a total surprise on that day, no snow on leaving Preston, the wintery weather started across Farington Moss and got progressively worse towards Merseyside. Martyn Hilbert.

Deep & Crisp and Even at Bamber Bridge as a Cravens Class 105 Power Twin formed of Driving Motor Composite Lavatory (DMCL) M50788 and Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M50761, was approaching the station with a Preston to Colne service on January 27th 1979. The Newton Heath allocated Cravens Power Twin fleet dominated these services from the late 1960's through the 1970's and into early 1980's. Martyn Hilbert.

Complete with its Paraffin tail lamp, a Newton Heath allocated Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin formed of cars M50761 & M50788, was stood at a snowy Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on January 27th 1979. The Cravens Power-Twins were synonymous with the ex L&Y routes in Lancashire and Greater Manchester from the late 1960's until their demise in the early 1980's. Martyn Hilbert.

On a bright Winter day, A Cravens Class 105 power-twin with Driving Motor Composite Lavatory M50801 at the rear, was stood at Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on January 27th 1979. On that cold day that Cravens would have no doubt been warm on the inside, complete with its oily/diesel smell aroma. What price now a ride to Colne in first class with a view of the line through the rear cab? Martyn Hilbert.
