Wednesday would usually be my day off from work around the time this photograph was taken, so quite often I would buy an Anglia Day Ranger ticket and do a circular tour from March or King's Lynn. This was the case on 5/3/80 when this was the scene alongside Ipswich station at 11.25 that morning. Set 63 with Felixstowe on the blinds comprised E56432 with power car E51268 at the rear. The most interesting aspect of this shot though, are the two dmu cars in the background. Set 70 has obviously had some incident befall it, as Gloucester RCW Class 100 power car E51127 has been separated from its partner Cravens Class 105 trailer E56134. Some of the Gloucester RCW units had charmed lives and E51127 had already survived being withdrawn in 1972 and stored in 1974 on its native Scottish Region, before being sent down to Norwich in May 1975. It lasted here until October 1980 when it was dispatched to the LMR ending up at Tyseley and finally Newton Heath from where it was retired in Dec. 82. Gerard Fletcher.

This is the old Sudbury station; the line was later cut back about one hundred yards and the former station site is now a leisure centre. Working on Colchester services are Class 105 DTCL E56114 and Class 100 DMBS E50346 on March 22, 1980. Jeremy Chapter.

Cars E56136 E51279 are seen working a Newcastle-South Shields service on 4/4/1980... not giving much away about the location, this shot was taken from Park Lane, Gateshead. Graeme Phillips Collection.
On 04/04/1980 a Class 105 (E56466 + E51283) arrives at Heworth, then a relatively new station which had opened to BR services on 05/11/1979. In the background, catenary masts for the Tyneside Metro system have yet to appear, although services started running to Heworth on 15/11/1981. Graeme Phillips Collection.

St. Annes on the Sea railway station with a dmu (Class 105 and Class 108) working an excursion train from St. Annes to York! Saturday 19 April 1980. Ian 10B.
With the red tail light illuminated, rusty track in the foreground was marking the limit of travel at the single track terminus at the market town of Sudbury on April 26th 1980. A Cravens Class 105 two-car DMU formed of cars E51277 & E56125 was awaiting departure with the 16.69 mile return journey to Colchester, joining the Great Eastern main line en-route at Marks Tey. Sudbury was once on a through route to and from Cambridge, the line was closed West of Sudbury in March 1967. The station in this view has since closed, with a new station being opened in 1991. Martyn Hilbert.
