With the red tail light illuminated, rusty track in the foreground was marking the limit of travel at the single track terminus at the market town of Sudbury on April 26th 1980. A Cravens Class 105 two-car DMU formed of cars E51277 & E56125 was awaiting departure with the 16.69 mile return journey to Colchester, joining the Great Eastern main line en-route at Marks Tey. Sudbury was once on a through route to and from Cambridge, the line was closed West of Sudbury in March 1967. The station in this view has since closed, with a new station being opened in 1991. Set: 39

At the one-time Cromer Beach terminus of the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway (M&GNJR), a Cravens Class 105 two-car DMU, formed of cars E51294 & M56114 had arrived from Norwich on April 29th 1980. The driver is changing ends for the run to the small terminus at Sheringham. The station at Cromer had just one platform face in use, the station being surrounded by empty and redundant railway land, a legacy from the days when the station here handled heavy Summer holiday traffic from the North and the Midlands via the now closed M&GNJR. Martyn Hilbert.

Set: 39

At the northern stub of the surviving portion of the former Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway (M&GNJR) still in use as part of the national network, a Cravens Class 105 two-car DMU formed of cars E56114 & E51293 had arrived at Sheringham with a service from Norwich via a reversal at Cromer on April 29th 1980. The single platform terminus at Sheringham, complete with its BR Eastern Region dark blue enamel sign, opened on January 2nd 1967 enabling the closure of the adjacent level crossing and the original M&GNJR station (now owned by the North Norfolk Railway). The single platform was intended as a temporary station as the line was scheduled for closure. In the event, it has gone on to be upgraded to accommodate the new Greater Anglia Class 755 DMU's. A connection from the Network Rail line at Sheringham to the North Norfolk Railway was opened in 2010. Martyn Hilbert.

31st May 1980

On a rather overcast May 31st 1980, Cravens Class 105 Motor Brake Second M50772 leads a service for Wigan Wallgate at Kirkby. Beyond the stop block on the other side of Glovers Brow bridge is 507025 awaiting the return journey to Liverpool Central. Kirkby had been a through station on the former L&Y main line from Liverpool Exchange to Manchester Victoria, but when the line was electrified from Walton Junction in 1978, the station at Kirkby was altered in a similar fashion to the layout at Ormskirk. A single line split into two halves separated by stop blocks with the electrics and diesel services terminating in the same platform. In this view the trackbed and the disused platform of this former double track railway are clearly visible, complete with maroon & cream gas lamp post. Martyn Hilbert.
