Very much the daily routine at the time, a Cravens Class 105 2-Car Power-Twin DMU with DMBS M50771 trailing, departs from Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on August 23rd 1980. Martyn Hilbert.
Almost funicular style, as one Cravens Class 105 arrives at Bamber Bridge with the 13.46 Colne to Preston, another has departed on the 14.30 Preston to Colne working. In this scene from August 23rd 1980, DMBS M50771 passes over the A6 trunk road about to make its last stop on the way to Preston. In the foreground the old L&Y subway is still in existance, note the youngster on a 1970's Chopper pushbike waiting on the pavement! On 23rd August 1980 M50796 heads a 4-car formation from Southport to Manchester Victoria, arriving at Appley Bridge. The linoleum works in the background dated from 1898, but had ceased production and was demolished the following year. Records show that the works, and a corn mill previously occupying the site, were rail connected from 1883 until July 1967. S Gaskell.
After depositing its passengers at Appley Bridge, Newton Heath based 50796 prepares to lead its service eastwards on 23rd August 1980. The 4-car formation was on a Southport to Manchester Victoria working. Dating from 1957, this unit was nearing the end of its life, being withdrawn in December 1982, and scrapped by Vic Berry of Leicester in 1984. S Gaskell.

On 6 September 1980, the Fakenham and Dereham Railway Society GE/GN Joint Freight Lines Railtour ran with a pair Cravens dmu sets. Nearest the camera at March is 56116, then should come 51256, 56125 and 51271. Having visited Wisbech, the tour then ran to Sleaford, Bardney, Shirebrook and Lincoln before returning to March.
