Cravens DMUs on Stratford depot with E50367 closest circa mid-June 1980. Paul Redmond.
A scene which sums up the downfall of a one-time main line route, On Midsummers Day, June 21st 1980 a Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin (the Motor Brake Second noted as M50768), arrives at Croston with the 13.37 Ormskirk to Preston service. The station was still equipped with vintage LMS concrete lamps on the one remaining operational platform. The former main line was singled in the early 1970s, and the one-time Goods Yard became a Timber Yard. Martyn Hilbert.
A Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin with Driving Motor Composite Lavatory car M50807 leading, was coupled to a 3-Car BRCW Class 104 set, stood at Poulton-Le-Fylde with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on June 28th 1980. Martyn Hilbert.
Having arrived at Kirkham & Wesham with the 18.01 from Blackpool South, an ex Eastern Region Class 105 Power/Trailer two-car set formed of Driving Motor Brake Second M50385 & Driving Trailer Composite Lavatory M56118, was stood in the Upside platform awaiting the return with the 18.58 to Blackpool South on June 28th 1980. These were the days when the majority of services on the Coast Line were formed of units shuttling back and forth between Kirkham and Blackpool South. Although the station at Kirkham had lost its iron & glass platform canopy, the former Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway buildings in the companies favourite yellow brick style, were still in use. At a run-down looking Windermere terminus on a wet Summer day, Cravens Class 105 M50385 & M56118 were the rear two cars of the four-car Oxenholme to Windermere branch service on June 29th 1980. Since 1986, this part of the station has become part of a supermarket. Martyn Hilbert.

A Southport to Bolton Service formed of a Cravens Class 105 2-Car DMU, with M56127 leading, calls at Meols Cop in the Southport Suburbs on the 5th July 1980. Until September 1964, Meols Cop was the former mid journey reversal point for the electrics that worked from Southport to Crossens on the now closed line to Preston. The intermediate stations between Meols Cop and Crossens, at Hesketh Park and Churchtown that were served by the electrics and also the steam-worked services to and from Preston, were also closed. On 12th July 1980 the “Forth Valley Wanderer” railtour visited the Granton branch in Edinburgh, seen here approaching Trinity station, which was closed as far back as 1925 and remains open as a private house. The North British Railway fixed distant signal was in place here until the line here was dismantled in 1986. The DMU used was formed of two blue/grey Class 105 DMBSs and a 101 centre car, 51474 + 59047 + 51480. Murray Liston.
On 12th July 1980 the “Forth Valley Wanderer” railtour visited the Granton branch in Edinburgh. This view shows the train approaching the tunnel under East Trinity Road, with Trinity Junction immediately afterwards. The original line to Scotland St, and thence by cable haulage through the tunnel to the current Waverley station, continues straight ahead. The line was taken up in the mid 1980s and now forms a footpath. Murray Liston.
On 12th July 1980 the “Forth Valley Wanderer” railtour visited a number of lines in Edinburgh, Grangemouth and Fife. A photo stop at the original Alloa station in the afternoon shows the unusual dmu formation a class 101 Met Camm centre car 59047 sandwiched by two of the few class 105 Cravens units to receive blue / grey livery, 51474 and 51480.
