A Cravens DMU at Gateshead on 6 June 1981 with "Middlesbrough" on the destination blind. The number on the closest vehicle appears to be E56425 which was withdrawn the same month, so why was it freshly repainted? George Woods.

A pair of Cravens units await departure from the north end bays at Cambridge on Monday 5th September 1983. Driving Trailer Composite E56426 leads the unit on the left which forms the 10:48 service to Ipswich via Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds. Set 65 on the right will follow on three minutes later with the 10:51 Cambridge to Doncaster via March, Peterborough, Spalding, Sleaford, Lincoln and Gainsborough, finally arriving in Doncaster at 14:23. A bit of an endurance test but I can’t help thinking it must have been quite relaxing in the 1st Class section behind the driver’s cab, especially if the blinds were up. Brian McDevitt.

Evidence of imminent resignalling is obvious in this photograph at Ely North taken on 19 October 1985 as a class 105 led by E54429 arrives at its destination. The light had all but caved in by this time but looking at the slides of classes 20, 31, 37 and 45 I took at March it had cleared by the time we reached there. Peter Tandy.

Wednesday would usually be my day off from work around the time this photograph was taken, so quite often I would buy an Anglia Day Ranger ticket and do a circular tour from March or King's Lynn. This was the case on 5/3/80 when this was the scene alongside Ipswich station at 11.25 that morning. Set 63 with Felixstowe on the blinds comprised E56432 with power car E51268 at the rear. The most interesting aspect of this shot though, are the two dmu cars in the background. Set 70 has obviously had some incident befall it, as Gloucester RCW Class 100 power car E51127 has been separated from its partner Cravens Class 105 trailer E56134. Some of the Gloucester RCW units had charmed lives and E51127 had already survived being withdrawn in 1972 and stored in 1974 on its native Scottish Region, before being sent down to Norwich in May 1975. It lasted here until October 1980 when it was dispatched to the LMR ending up at Tyseley and finally Newton Heath from where it was retired in Dec. 82. Gerard Fletcher.
