Even in 1986 some of the cross country services from Cambridge to Birmingham were still formed of classic dmus. On March 15 1M66, the 08.52 ex Cambridge, is seen here arriving at Whittlesea with a four car formation of Cravens set 49 (E54463 + E51271) leading a 2 car Metro-Cammell Class 101. Naturally we chose to sit in the leading set for maximum good vibrations! Photo by Philip Mott. Gerard Fletcher.
At Peterborough set 49 makes a healthy exhaust as it departs for Birmingham - you can almost hear that great Cravens cacophany. Taken on March 15th, 1986, by the end of July 1986, the number of Cravens sets in service at Norwich had reduced to just seven, the set seen here E51271 + E54463 along with six other sets went to Lincoln for a brief reprieve. The view from the Hexham station footbridge looking west on 4 August 1981. The dmu is a Cravens 2-car set of Class 105, made up of cars 56464/51279. From memory I think it has arrived on a service from Newcastle and is about set back over the crossover into the eastbound platform to form the 13.10 back to Newcastle Central. Note the wagons being filled with sand on the right of my pic, and Hexham signal box on the gantry in the background. The box is Grade II-listed and of NER origin. Lewis Bevan.
