A Class 108 DMU (53628 + 54279) forms the 16.37 Kettering - Corby departing from Kettering on 25 May 1990, during the last week of service of the experimental Kettering-Corby service. Corby station had been closed in May 1967, but was re-opened on an experimental basis in April 1987. This service was withdrawn as from 2 June 1990. The closure left Corby as, allegedly, the largest town in Europe without a rail service, and, in the ensuing years, there were various proposals for trains to serve Corby once again. But it would be nearly 19 years until East Midlands Trains re-introduced a regular service, including through trains to London, to the town. Lewis Bevan.

With the blue waters of the Exe Estuary as a backdrop, a two-car Derby Lightweight DMU formed of cars 52063 & 51939, was departing from Starcross with the 15.45 Exmouth to Paignton service on May 30th 1990. The unit was one of several first generation DMU's cobbled together and sent to Plymouth Laira Depot in 1987/88 following various issues and the eventual migration of the Class 142 'Skippers' to the North. The second station at Corby was open between 13 April 1987 and 2 June 1990. Here is one of workings on the last day, with class 108 DMU (51916+54194) at the little platform on the shuttle to Kettering. A third station opened on 23 February 2009 and it now sees an hourly service to London. Note the small RIP board attached to the left hand lamp iron. Kevin Lane.
