Apart from the new trains, relatively little seems to have changed at Carlisle Citadel station over the decades, though the assorted trolleys visible here are certainly a thing of the past. In 1986, a Class 108, the mainstay of Cumbrian local services for many years, prepares to depart. The destination blind suggests a length trip of several hours to Preston via Barrow-in-Furness. Five years after the closure of the Woodhead route, Class 108/101 hybrid DMU on a Huddersfield-Sheffield service leaves Penistone station and trundles across what remains of Huddersfield Junction.
