My usual route into Wigan along the towpath of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal took me out of the countryside and through a grim area of factories and derelict warehouses. Approaching the town on the 24th June 1984 I paused to capture a train of four class 108 DMU cars rattling its way between Wigan and Southport. S Gaskell.

After photographing from the bridge taking Appley Lane North over the railway, a short way further on I crossed the canal via Gillibrand Bridge and took the footpath which soon passed over the railway. Returning to Appley Bridge I found 47 229 in the waste siding coupled to its train of empty containers and ready to leave, however the 2-car Class 108 DMU from Southport would have to clear the section first. 22nd August 1984. S Gaskell.
