Further to some recent photos of the remodelling of the London end of Tonbridge on other groups, here is an earlier view of the preparatory work on the curve around towards Hildenborough taken on Sunday 26-7-92. The train is noteworthy too being DMU Set L490 which consisted of a pair of Class 108 cars (DMC 51572 and DMBS 53599) strengthened to 3-cars by the addiction of an unknown centre car. Class 108 stock was pretty unusual at Tonbridge. The photo was taken at about 17.10hrs and the unit had just shunted out of the Up Redhill Branch Siding and was now heading for Hither Green for refuelling as the normal access to Chart Leacon (Ashford) was blocked by an engineering possession. CEP and EPB units are berthed in the Down Main Sidings and an EDL visible in the West Yard. John Atkinson.

Closest is 54208, which the Roger Harris allocation book notes as being stored there after withdrawal from Longsight in December 1992 till moving to Tyseley circa late January 1994. In a then everyday scene, with rolling stock that now is no longer in service, this was the view from the footbridge at Manchester Piccadilly on February 28th 1992 before the station roof was given a refurbishment. Regional Railways liveried Class 305 305507 was awaiting departure with a service to Glossop and Hadfield, while in platform 1 was a two-car Class 108 formed of cars M54275 & M51421 (LO253), on a service to New Mills Central. Seeing out its last days working from Longsight Depot as set LO253, and working mainly on local services from Manchester Piccadilly, Class 108 cars M54275 & M51421 were awaiting departure from platform 1 at Piccadilly with a service to New Mills Central on February 28th 1992. They (and other life-expired first generation units), were kept in service due to the then ongoing problems with the Class 142 Pacer fleet. Martyn Hilbert.
