Complete with a Red Dragon on its cab front, a legacy from its brief sojourn in South Wales operating from Landore Depot during 1991, a Class 108 two-car Derby Lightweight DMU formed of cars 51937 & 52053 was climbing Farington Curve with the 08.31 Preston to Clitheroe service on August 15th 1992. A month after this image was recorded the unit was converted to a departmental Sandite unit. 51937 has survived into preservation at the Poulton & Wyre Railway. Martyn Hilbert.
Derby Class 108 (LO612) M51937 & M52053 - Preston Station. A close-up of Class 108 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M51937 stood in platform 2 at Preston awaiting departure with the 10.23 service to Ormskirk on August 15th 1992. The car had previously been allocated to Landore Depot at Swansea as part of set S937 (with Driving Trailer 52058) during the latter part of 1991, hence the Welsh Dragon emblem on the cab front. Following departmental use, the unit was withdrawn in 1993, but M51937 has survived into preservation and is now part of the two-car Class 108 DMU owned by the Poulton & Wyre Railway based on part of the former Fleetwood line. On the GWR Birmingham to Leamington Spa line is Acocks Green station which is visible in the background of this picture dated 15 June 1987. My note suggests that this was a driver training run using class 108 T204 formed of 51939 + 52063 and this is possible as 2 car units were uncommon on this line at the time. This was part of the former 4 track section and the wide area of ballast on the right of the picture shows where the now-gone lines were situated. Peter Tandy.
