The photographer left it a tad too late to take the shot resulting in some blurring on the cab so the set number is not clear but the marks on the cab front match 52063 in set P956. With the blue waters of the Exe Estuary as a backdrop, a two-car Derby Lightweight DMU formed of cars 52063 & 51939, was departing from Starcross with the 15.45 Exmouth to Paignton service on May 30th 1990. The unit was one of several first generation DMU's cobbled together and sent to Plymouth Laira Depot in 1987/88 following various issues and the eventual migration of the Class 142 'Skippers' to the North. Derby built Class 108 Driving Trailer Second Lavatory (DTSL) M52064 was arriving at Rufford whilst leading a Preston to Ormskirk service on July 25th 1985. The car was one of the final batch of Class 108's built at Derby in 1961 and was the penultimate vehicle constructed of a total of 333 cars built to various configurations. M52064 has survived into preservation at the Severn Valley Railway. Martyn Hilbert.
