Two Class 108/115 hybrids 54259 + 51878 / 51651 + 54213 on the Chiltern Link (Quaintonian) at Quainton Road on 25 May 1987. Stuart Mackay Collection.
54259 - 51878 - 51651 - 54213 on the Chiltern Link (Quaintonian) at Quainton Road, 25/5/87. Robert Frise.
A two-car Class 108 DMU, M56260 and presumably M50977, in New Mills Central circa 1978. The blind suggests it is working a Manchester - New Mills service via Bredbury. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 108 DMU set CH271 (54260 + 53931) at Hunts Cross, 10/4/89. Sparegang.
Mistimed. Of course in retrospect, I should have waited a couple of moments for these alighting passengers to pass before releasing the shutter. It's evening one day in April 1992, and a first generation dmu (set B979, presumably 54260 + 53931) is about to get away from Bedminster station, Bristol. Most likely this is a service for Weston-super-Mare but the destination blind has not been set. That's my Raleigh "Royal" touring cycle leaning against the lamp post when it was brand new. It's still going strong today, but sadly those panniers, which gave many years of sterling service, do not survive. Tom Harper.
With Globe Mill at Midge Hall in the background, a 2-Car Class 108 with M54261 leading, passes over Narrow Lane Crossing whilst forming the 10.09 Preston to Ormskirk service on March 8th 1986. Martyn Hilbert.
DTS(L) M54261 (presumably with M53978) leads a four-car formation calling at Kent's Bank (Cumbria) with the 12:07 Lancaster-Barrow, 11/6/88. The Class 108s allocated to Carlisle Kingmoor (KD) depot were the mainstay of local services in Cumbria and North Lancashire for many years. In May 1988, shortly before this image was taken, KD closed, and the fleet was split between Heaton (HT) depot at Newcastle for Cumbian Coast / Windermere routes, and Chester (CH) for north Lancashire routes, such as the service illustrated. Graeme Phillips Collection.
Class 108 Driving Trailer Second Lavatory (DTSL) car M54261 was leading the eight-car Blackpool North to Carlisle Sunday Dalesrail service, passing Lostock Hall Junction on September 7th 1988. The service was made up of three pairs of Class 108's with a Class 104 bringing up the rear. Martyn Hilbert.
Class 108 set T210 (54261 and presumably 53978) in Derby station, circa summer 1989. Malcolm Clements.
M56262 + M50979 are seen departing Bedford with the 12.20pm service to Hitchin on 18 September 1961. Michael Mensing.
A (blue square) Derby Lightweight twin (M56262 seems to be the closest vehicle, if so the DMBS is 50979) after arrival at Bedford Midland Road on 19 September 1961. It will depart on the 10.45am to Hitchin. Michael Mensing.
A (blue square) Derby Lightweight twin (M56262 seems to be the DTCL which was paired with 50979) working the 10.45am Bedford Midland Road to Hitchin on 19 September 1961. Taken south of Bedford on the crossing to the singled line. Michael Mensing.
A London Midland Region publicity image (negative D4878) showing a two-car Blue Square Derby Lightweight unit at Syston on the Midland Main Line. Closest is M56262, presumably paired with original partner M50979. The pair had a nomadic existence in their early years being allocated to Newton Heath, Bedford, Toton, Fleetwood, Newton Heath again then Buxton - all the first four years! The location suggests it was taken during its time at Toton which was December 1961 to May 1962. British Railways.
A class 108 (DTCL 54262 nearest camera, presumably 53955) works a local service on the Cumbrian Coast line at Drigg - c.1984. 53A Models of Hull Collection.
Having just passed under the bridge at Flag Lane, a tidy-looking two-car Class 108 formed of cars 54262 & 53955 was running along the last few yards of the Ormskirk route as it approached Farington Curve Junction whilst working the 11.10 Ormskirk to Blackpool South service on May 4th 1987. With the East Lancashire route in the foreground, a Class 104 DMU is visible through the left hand bridge span on a Colne to Preston working, waiting at signal PN522 for the 108 to clear the junction. Martyn Hilbert.
Two two-car Class 108s with 54262 leading (presumably with 53955) at Selside on the Settle and Carlisle line, with Penyghent on the left. 11-7-87. Ian Cuthbertson Collection.
One of the then ubiquitous Class 108 DMUs, long associated with the Cumbrian Coast route, calls at Drigg station 17/04/1989. The last two digits of the driver trailer can be made out as 62, making this 54262, which should be paired with 53955 at this time. Graeme Phillips Collection.
54262 and 53955 awaiting departure at Newcastle with the 17:24 Newcastle - Hexham on Wednesday 23rd August 1989. The Heaton (HT) depot sticker, depicting the Tyne bridge, is clearly visible below the car number, which by this time has no regional prefix. This rush hour service was cancelled more often than not, probably due to lack of train unit, resulting in the 1715 Newcastle-Girvan (a ScotRail Class 156) being delayed to depart at 1724 and having to call at stations to Hexham. Graeme Phillips.
54262 + 53955 at Workington with the 09:43 Carlisle - Barrow service on August 27, 1990. Hamish Stevenson.
The two differing cab designs of Derby class 108 units face to face - 54262 on the right multied up with 54484 on the left at Manchester Victoria on 27/Jul/1991. Note the unorthodox station name scrawled on the slightly unfortunately placed lamp post! Robert Chilton.
