A Cleethorpes bound diesel multiple unit leaves Thorne South station on the Doncaster to Scunthorpe section of the old Ms&LR / Great Central line, May 15th, 1974. Pete LG99.
The open wasteland that the Great Central Railway at Thorne South in South Yorkshire became after rationalisation. The station, opened in 1864, is on the old Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway, later Great Central Railway, line from Sheffield to Grimsby. Taken on 15th May 1974, the permanent way hut on the right sits in isolation & what once was an island platform with goods lines to the right is now an unusally wide bare expanse against which the Scunthorpe bound dmu is waiting. Access to the platforms used to be via a dark subway with steps up. Today this has been swept away & new basic platforms closer to the South Common estate have been built behind the camera. To the left is the old stationmaster's house now in private hands & being extended. Pete LG99.

December 1974 A dull mid-winter's day in South Yorkshire and a dmu for Hull enters Stainforth & Hatfield station from Doncaster to the south - note the steam-age red tail lamp - next stop Thorne North. The station and four track main line dates from the Great Central Railway's 1912 rebuild. The entrance was via the lane on the extreme right as it is today to the recently rebuilt station. That lane runs down from the Stainforth to Hatfield road just past the bridge from which the photo was taken in December 1974. Hatfield colliery's infrastructure looms over the scene and the railway & yards look like hives of activity. Pete LG99.
A 2-car 114 having reached it's destination of Cleethorpes, probably from New Holland. Undated. Ian Francis.

Looking north from St James Bridge reveals a wide view of the southern end of Doncaster station in 1975. A Class 114 dmu can be seen entering platform 8 while a Class 114 and Class 105 stand in bay platforms 2 & 3 on the right. The Plant offices are on the far left with the footbridge entrance spanning the whole complex. Pete LG99.

A Class 114 DMU formed of E56001 + E50044 arrives into Starbeck with a six-wheeled van on the rear. They are working the 4.00pm Harrogate - York service on 1 October 1975. E56001, and E50001, had slightly different shaped roof domes from the rest of the type, resulting in the side and top faces of the destination boxes being smaller, and the top marker light not protruding so much. E50001 differed from E56001 in that the destination box dropped below the gutter line. Michael Mensing.
