From platform 8 on Doncaster station on 13th September 1980 there is a good view of the Plant, with a line of diesel multiple units are on the closest line (a 104 nearest) while a two car Class 114 sets off on the right. The station. opened in 1848, was joint Great Northern & Great Central Railways, then LNER who rebuilt it in 1938. Pete LG99.

114 DMU

28th September 1980

In refurbished livery, Class 114 two-car DMU formed of E50001 & E56043 was stood at a run-down looking New Holland Town with a service from New Holland Pier to Cleethorpes on Sunday September 28th 1980. The station here and the 1,375 Yard Pier and the station at the Pier Head (and the connecting ferry service across the River Humber to Hull) was closed some nine months after this image was recorded. The last day of service was June 1st 1981, commensurate with the opening of the Humber Suspension Bridge. This place was in a time-warp, with BR Eastern Region blue enamel signage and mechanical signalling including some lower quadrants. This was my one and only visit to New Holland Pier, and my regret is that I did not have a ride on the DMU, photograph the Ferry, or by a ticket as a souvenir. Martyn Hilbert.

A refurbished Class 114 DMU formed of cars E56043 & E50001 arrives at New Holland Town with a service from Cleethorpes to New Holland Pier on September 28th 1980. There is much of interest in this view, including a pair of lower quadrant signals, the North to West curve towards Barton-On-Humber, Barrow Road Signal box and the level crossing giving vehicular access to the Pier and the ferry service across the Humber to Hull. Martyn Hilbert.

The linkspan connecting the station to the ferry landing stage can be seen to the right of the station building. A Morris Minor and a Mark 3 Ford Cortina are parked behind the buffer stops. In this period only one track was in situ at this end of the Pier. Martyn Hilbert.

There is a air of dereliction all around, the pier closed to passenger trains following the opening of the Humber Suspension Bridge in June 1981. Martyn Hilbert.

114 DMU

16th October 1980

The very rare sight of a DMU (classes 114 & 105) on a Liverpool Street - Cambridge service: E50003, E56014, E56114 and E51294 head the 12.05 Liverpool Street - Cambridge at Hackney Downs presumably due to shortage of loco or stock. The same unit worked Up on the 09.27 Cambridge - Liverpool Street and it wasn't doing too badly at only 8 minutes late! 16/Oct/1980. Robert Chilton.

114 DMU

24th October 1980

Despite succumbing to closure in September 1961, the platforms, station buildings and even the waiting shelter canopy were still intact at Cowbit on 24th October 1980, some two years before the line from March to Spalding closed completely. This Lincoln based Derby Heavyweight Class 114 DMU formed of cars E56043 & E50001 was working the 13.50 Cambridge - Doncaster local service, seen heading for its next stop at Spalding. In the early 1970s, the passenger service on the joint line was largely long distance loco hauled services, notably the Yarmouth - York, Newcastle - Norwich and Harwich - Manchester 'Boat Train' all used this route. In around 1974 DMUs took over being mainly supplied by Norwich and Lincoln depots, but occasionally Tyneside and Calder Valley sets would make appearances. Gerard Fletcher.

The 10.26 Doncaster - Cambridge dmu service, one of three southbound passenger services still serving the joint line in 1980. The setting is Murrow West. This was at one time the site of a flat crossing with the M&GN Peterborough - Wisbech - Sutton Bridge line on which, until its closure in 1959, the hamlet of Murrow had the extravagant facilities of a further station named Murrow East. On 30th October 1980 motoring past are Lincoln based Class 114 Derby 'heavyweight' set E50046 + E56026 leading Norwich allocated Cravens Class 105 unit E56480 + E51261 (set 65). Gerard Fletcher.
