Class 114s were quite a rare sight at Stratford-upon-Avon by 26 April 1989 so when I saw T221 (presumably 53002 + 54047) arrive at the station from my then nearby home I took a camera down for a shot. It is seen here leaving platform 2 with the customary exhaust smoke as the 08.13 to Leamington Spa with the familiar figure of staff member Aubrey Wheeler silhouetted on platform 1. I had good relationships with most of the staff here and Aubrey in particular who always put aside a copy of the week's Special Traffic Notice (STN) for to collect on either Friday evening or Saturday morning. This picture was taken in vertical format on a Mamiya 645 but a large scan has allowed me to crop it to landscape format without any significant loss of quality. Peter Tandy.

Class 114 DMU set T222 (presumably 54039 + 53005) gets away from its Attenborough stop en route to Derby in February 1989. The four-aspect signal, waiting room and footbridge have all been replaced since this time, arguably with less aesthetic structures in all three cases. Andrew Walker.

An unusual visitor to Hereford, at that time, in the form of a Class 114 'Derby Heavyweight' DMU, set T223 (presumably 54040 + 53006), sits in bay platform 4 at Hereford station. Photo taken sometime between 5th & 8th June 1989. Paul James.

Two car class 114 T226 (54010 + 53018) is leaving the Stratford-upon-Avon branch at Hatton in 1988 just before making its stop for any passengers and then crossing to the up main line for the rest of the journey to Warwick and Leamington Spa. As with everywhere on the network this location has suffered from largely unchecked vegetation growth and there isn't a clear shot here in 2022. Peter Tandy.

A busy moment at Leamington Spa in 1988. The through platform lines are occupied by DMUs of Class 117 (heritage GWR liveried unit T305 51410 + 59520 + 51368 on the left) and Class 114 (set T227 with 53019 visible), whilst an unidentified class 58 passes through the centre road with a loaded MGR coal train destined for Didcot power station. Bob Belcher.
Mainly associated with Lincolnshire, some of the Derby built heavyweight units were subsequently moved away. Inevitably in its quest for non-standardisation, Tyseley received some. Here, trailer 54027 leads a Corby service into Kettering on 7/1/88. The car park to the right was the site of the steam shed. Mike Dean.

The tour was organised by the Institute of Mining Engineers. Andrew Walker.
