An official image (Negative A1.667, collection unknown, possibly Swindon Works?) showing W50050 dated 30/5/57 when the vehicle was a just a few weeks old. The text reads 'Suburban Diesel Set Derby Built Cracked Windows in Drivers Cab' and the damage can be seen at the top centre of the closest window. There is also a patch of different colour paint on the lower left corner, a repair? British Railways.

The ex-GWR trackbed at this point now carries the Midland Metro and today the train would have just left the Kenrick Park stop. Next would be Trinity Way and then West Bromwich Central. Gleaming in fresh B.R. DMU green W50071 stands at Birmingham Snow Hill. This Derby Motor Brake Second was delivered new to Tyseley in 1957, later renumbered 53071 and designated Class 116 it was to spend roughly the next 30 years trundling about the West Midlands. A GWR AEC railcar sulks in the background, it would be working a Dudley service. In the cab of W50071 a very mature driver in full steam age uniform of overalls and grease-top cap sorts out the controls of his new charge. Note the face drawn on the buffer. A Derby suburban set headed by W50878 arrives at Birmingham Snow Hill on 29 November 1957 ready to work the 2.05pm to Stratford-upon-Avon. In brand new condition, it was delivered that month and the set would also contain 59333 and 50825. Michael Mensing.

Passenger and freight at Whitlock's End. Pannier tank 9682, a stalwart of 84E Tyseley shed, is in charge of a pick-up freight from Stratford upon Avon. At Whitlock's End station a brand new DMU is heading for Henley-in-Arden, it's white roof unblemished and speed whiskers not added.This is a Derby suburban 2nd series set with 2 character reporting code box, (B0) on this, these were in service by 1958. Whitlock's End (Halt) was a little used station built entirely from wood, it had a footpath that ran along the embankment top (still there but 'difficult') Today the station has been totally rebuilt with disabled access ramps and direct steps to the massive car park, the field to the right on this shot. Trains now terminate here giving a service to Birmingham every 20 minutes and to Stratford every hour. Two Derby suburban triple DMU sets seen at "Rhondda Cutting", Pontypridd circa mid-1958. It carries a plate with its diagram BB, this left Barry at 05:35 for two morning trips to Treherbert, followed in the afternoon by two trips to Merthyr, after the second of which the return run was through to Llantwit Major, a total of over 280 miles. Pontypridd Observer.
