In 1983 there was still a considerable amount of the South Wales industrial landscape to be seen. This is Trehafod and the headstocks are Lewis Merthyr colliery, it was once one of the most productive mines in the country. The colliery is now part of the Rhonda Heritage Park. The train is the 10.19 Treherbert - Barry service on 22/09/1983, at this time all Valley Lines services were formed of Cardiff based class 116 units. Geoff Dowling.

A Stratford allocated 3-car class 116 DMU set is seen in the branch terminus at Southminster on 31/03/84. The DMU will depart as train 2J15 the 12.25 to Wickford. This rural backwater on the Essex Marshes was electrified two year after this shot was taken with electric services starting on 12th May 1986 since then new housing on the route has seen a and more frequent services introduced with two trains an hour on the 16 mile long branch.
