TS511

116 DMU

11th July 1987

53832

A bit of paint makes all the difference when applied to a class 116 DMU; the ubiquitous type of unit in the West Midlands in 1987. On 11 July of that year T511 with 53832 + 59649 + 53913 was approaching Bearley Junction when I photographed it working a Leamington Spa to Stratford-upon-Avon train. Peter Tandy.

116 DMU

24th September 1987

53832

At Birmingham Moor Street 1987 on 24/9/87, 2 days before the closure of the terminal platforms, a class 116 DMU awaits departure with a Leamington Spa service. It carries set number TS511 in the window, by this date it would probably be known as set T511, presumably with 53832 closest with 59649 + 53913. Stephen Burdett.

TS512

116 DMU

2nd April 1977

50051

The 12.03pm Kidderminster - Lichfield Central service arrives into Rowley Regis station on 2 April 1977. Formed of two Class 116 DMUs, the closest set TS512 (50051 and presumably 59012 + 50113) appears to have been recently outshopped after refurbishment. Michael Mensing.

116 DMU

1st March 1981

50051

Set TS512 (M50051 + M59358 + M50113) is an unusual visitor at Thornaby on March 1st, 1981, for tyre turning John Carter.

116 DMU

18th April 1981

50113

M50113 heads the 3-car dmu forming the 12.46 to Stratford-upon-Avon at Leamington Spa on 18 April 1981, presumably with 59012 + 50051. The blue-grey livery includes the West Midlands PTE logo. Tom Burnham.

116 DMU

17th February 1982

Class 116 Derby 3-car DMU set TS512 stabled Birmingham Moor Street on 17-2-82. On Tour With the Class 13 Army.

116 DMU

January 1985

53113

A couple of Class 116 DMUs on an empty stock working from Tyseley to New Street have just passed Small Heath, January 1985. The rear vehicle is 53113 (set TS512). Stephen Burdett.

116 DMU

16th August 1986

53063

Barnt Green is the junction for the Redditch branch, the line for which curves sharply away from the Birmingham to Bristol line. Line occupation, especially in the summer, meant that trains from Redditch often had quite a wait in the platform until Saltley Power Box found them a path, especially if they were a minute or two late arriving. The usual class 116 (TS512, presumably 53063 + 59717 + 53119) is shown here on 16 August 1986 waiting at the signal before heading off to Lichfield City via Birmingham New Street. Peter Tandy.

116 DMU

24th April 1987

53063

An evening train from Leamington Spa to Birmingham Moor Street had just dropped off a few passengers at Hatton when I photographed it on 24 April 1987. The unit is the usual class 116 3 car - set TS512 presumably 53063 + 59717 (a 115 TS) + 53119. Peter Tandy.

116 DMU

September 1987

An unidentified Class 58 hauling coal empties from Didcot back to the East Midlands coal fields passes Tyseley based Class 116 DMU TS512 in the station at Leamington Spa in September 1987. Bob Belcher.

TS513

116 DMU

22nd May 1976

50120

Class 116 DMU set TS513 (presumably 50120 + 59013 + 50077) with a Class 120 on the rear seen in Smethwick West station on 22 May 1976. Michael Mensing.

116 DMU

23rd September 1978

50077

A class 116 dmu (set TS513, presumably 50077 + 59013 + 50120) rattles over the junction at Water Orton with a Derby to Birmingham New Street service 23/9/1978. Hams Hall power station dominates. Stephen Burdett.

116 DMU

20th April 1980

50120

Nuneaton 20 April 1980. Despite having "Special" as a destination, this three-car class 116 diesel set is heading to a fairly normal destination in the form of Coventry. The formation of set TS513 at this time was 50120/59013/50077, a formation it held from 1969 to 1983. Jeremy Chapter.

116 DMU

3rd August 1985

53120

The non-too common sight of a Tyseley allocated Derby built Class 116 Suburban three-car DMU (M53120, M59442 & M53077) at Bamber Bridge with a Colne to Preston service on August 3rd 1985. With its Tyseley Depot board in the cab window (TS513), it would appear that the unit had been temporarily allocated to Newton Heath Depot to cover a shortage of DMU sets. Martyn Hilbert.

116 DMU

14th June 1986

53120

Longbridge station on 14 June 1986 has on the right 53120 leading away from the station on the Cross City Line to Lichfield City. The Class 121 DTS in use as a centre car is presumably 54284, the Class 116 DMBS on the rear should be 53077, these forming set TS513. A sister unit is in the down platform with a train for Redditch, the other end of the line. Peter Tandy.

116 DMU

23rd April 1987

53120

Class 116 set TS513 enters Birmingham New Street on 23 April 1987. DMS M53120 leads. Steve Jones.

116 DMU

7th September 1987

53120

Class 116/115/116 set T513 (presumably 53120 + 59650 + 53077) runs past Stratford-upon-Avon East signalbox on 7 September 1987. The train was working the 14.10 to the terminus from Birmingham Moor Street. Peter Tandy.

116 DMU

29th June 1988

53120

This picture was taken on 29 June 1988 when I was scoping out a few locations for shots of steam workings on a weekend of intensive specials between Tyseley and Stratford-upon-Avon. The train is a Birmingham Moor Street to Stratford formed of class 116 TS513 (presumably 53120 + 59650 + 53077 - although their withdrawal pre-date the image!). Henley station can just be made out in the background and it appears that the leading cab of the unit has taken a bit of a clout in the recent past. Peter Tandy.

TS514

116 DMU

25th February 1986

A class 116 on a Birmingham New Street to Kidderminster service passes Rood End Yard near Langley Green on 25/2/1986. A youngster is evident in the cab and probably on a treat with his dad!! Stephen Burdett.

116 DMU

8th March 1986

53870

This is a shot of the usual 3 coach class 116 forming a Birmingham New Street to Kidderminster service approaching Stourbridge Junction on 8 March 1986. The set number is TS514 presumably formed 53870 + 59629 + 53923. Also of interest is 25 205 in the sidings which would have been on standby duties should a northbound freight have needed banking assistance on the now-closed line through Dudley towards Bescot. There must have been such a train expected on this Saturday morning because there certainly wasn't a locomotive stabled here every week, at least on the weekends that I visited. Peter Tandy.
