On Sunday 28th May 1989 the overhead power lines were switched off for maintenance etc, therefore the first few up locals from Birmingham / Rugby and Northampton were DMUs. My train to work that Sunday morning was a 4-car DMU Set from Tyseley depot, seen here in the Up Main Platform at Watford Junction, no doubt the Up Slow Line was also out for track maintenance! The back coach as seen here is a Class 116 53891 departing Watford Junction for Euston. AndrewHA.
Barnt Green station is at the junction where the Redditch branch leaves the Birmingham to Gloucester main line. On 26 August 1991 Tyseley set T416 was formed of 53891 + 59609 + 59648 + 51876 from classes 116, 127 and 115 as it joined the branch with a Cross City service from Four Oaks. This formation was the usual for Tyseley's four-car sets at the time but class 150s were not far off mass introduction so scenes like this were well worth recording and in 2021 OHLE masts have changed everything with electric units working both the branch and Bromsgrove terminating trains. Peter Tandy.
DMU set T326 - presumably Class 116 DMS 53891 + Class 127 TSL 59609 + Class 116 DMBS 51131 - arriving Bournville for Birmingham New Street 1-12-92. On Tour With the Class 13 Army.
Class 116/127 combination T326 (presumably 53891 + 59609 + 51131) is seen forming a Lincoln service at Nottingham in May 1993. Note the first two vehicles are missing their numbers (possibly due to dust removal software). Andrew Walker.
Following an overnight snowfall, various DMU's were stabled at Hamilton Depot on March 23rd 1980. The nearest car is Class 116 Driving Motor Second, SC50892. Martyn Hilbert.
In 1985 Class 116 DMU sets 116 392 + 116 388 wait to leave Largs with 2T20 the 10.52 to Glasgow Central. This once four platform station had by this date already been reduced to 2 and the DMU's were replaced by class 318 EMU's with electrification in 1986. Adrian Nicholls.
Class 116 53892, set number 116 392, is seen at Tyseley on 07.03.1987 after transfer from Scotland. Andy Cole.
Class 116 vehicles, M50893 closest at the north end of Cricklewood depot, date unknown. It was allocated there from 1968 - 1983. Walter Burt.
Class 116 DMUs in Birmingham Moor Street station on 20 July 1983. On the right is set TS562 (presumably 53893 + 59634 + 53075) and on the left TS534 (presumably 53886 + 59342 + 53053). Brian Daniels.
No room in the bays. This was the scene one Saturday morning in April 1985 with every bay road on the down side at Leamington Spa occupied. The train on the left has a window board reading T619 but it appears to be a single unit as was the practice at the time, preparing to head off to Stratford-upon-Avon within the next few minutes. Next in line is 58 016 which was also getting ready to move out onto the main line. This was a weekly occurrence at the time and I seem to recall that the locomotive involved may have taken over a northbound freightliner with the other engine coming off the train but I didn't make any notes and can't remember exactly what happened. To the right of 58 016 is T623, probably formed of 53893 + 59603 + 53838, and then a second class 116 with no set number visible. The latter 2 units were stabled ready to work trains to Birmingham Moor Street later in the day. Peter Tandy.
53893 at Doncaster Works, circa late '80s - 1990. It is sitting on accommodation bogies, missing its doors, and seems to be undergoing repairs to the drivers side of the cab. Ross Aitken.
Brand new Derby suburban motor second W50894, it seems to be at Swindon Works, date unknown. Its first allocation was Cardiff Cathays in January 1958. Stuart Mackay Collection.
50894 at Haymarket mpd on 10th May 1981 Graham Johnston.
Early in the morning of 4 June 1986, while waiting for the weedkiller with 47 013 to arrive I took this shot of a class 116 (TS609, presumably 53894 + 59603 (a 127) + 53853) leaving the siding to form the 06.30 to Birmingham with the driver Oliver, whose surname I forget, standing in the cab. At this time, Stratford was a signing-on and stabling point and if one was lucky a unit would have been put in this siding on the previous night. This piece of track was not regularly used and I was pleased to get this shot with the lower quadrant signal in the "off" position, even though the sun was not yet properly on the track. Peter Tandy.
An interesting train on the North Warwickshire line to Birmingham in 1986 was the daily train booked to start at 08.13 from Henley-in-Arden which had arrived earlier and was routed into the bay platform; the only service so to do. This gave the rare opportunity to photograph a unit in the otherwise unused platform 3 and to take a picture with the signal in the clear position. I should like to have had a picture of the DMU nearer the signal but wanted to catch it for the onward journey. The train, formed of the usual class 116 3 car set on this occasions TS609 (presumably 53894 + 59603 (a 127) + 53853), is seen here on 29 August 1986 with the guard returning to his van in order to give the right of way to the driver. Peter Tandy.
The often-smokey atmosphere of Birmingham New Street is shown to good effect in this rather gloomy shot, with Tyseley's hybrid 4-car suburban set T409 formed class 116 DMS 53894 (nearest) with out of sight 59367 (class 116 TC), 59600 (class 127 TSL) & 51860 (class 115 DMBS) adding it's contribution on 26/Jul/1991. Many of the Tyseley suburban sets contained class 127 centre trailers which were gangwayed, refurbished and painted blue/grey for the first time in their lives when the St.Pancras - Bedford line was electrified. This saw the class 127 power cars withdrawn, with some being converted for parcels use, and the trailers sent north to the West Midlands for another 10 years' use and becoming the longest-lived class 127 vehicles other than those which were preserved. Robert Chilton.
Two Class 116 sets - date unknown - in the sidings neat Hood Road at Barry. W50895 is the closest vehicle. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Two Class 116 DMUs at Cardiff Central with what is thought to be the 10:42 (SO) Rhymney-Penarth service on 5 June 1976. Closest is refurbished C311, presumably 50895 + 59350 + 50842. Robert Thomas.
Refurbished Class 116 DMU set C311 (presumably 50895 + 59350 + 50842) passes Kidderminster Junction signalbox on 7 August 1976. It is displaying 'Special' on the destination blind but Michael recorded the train as the 16:50 Hereford - Birmingham New Street. Michael Mensing.
In 1979 a series of special trains was arranged over the Coalbrookdale branch to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the building of the Ironbridge. A temporary platform was set up at Coalbrookdale (just past mp161) and here is the 11.45 ex-Wolverhampton at that temporary platform on 15 July 1979; it will return to Wolverhampton as the 16.20 from Coalbrookdale. The train is formed of a Tyseley-based Class 116 dmu, set TS543, with coaches 50895/59350/50842. Lewis Bevan.
