Class 116 DMUs were the commonest sets found in the West Midlands with Tyseley having a large allocation. In this picture from Kidderminster taken on 7 May 1988 set T325 formed of 51142 + 59757 + 53060 was approaching Kidderminster station with a Worcester to Birmingham New Street service. The background has changed since this date with the Severn Valley Railway having built various structures including a large carriage shed on the land on the right hand side. Peter Tandy.

A Derby suburban triple DMU in Birmingham New Street circa late 1960s. M51143 seems to be the closest vehicle, displaying set number 337 in the cab window, and lots of staff members standing around chatting. Stuart Mackay Collection.

The rainbow provides a clue as to what is coming as a class 116 unit (believed to comprise vehicles 51143 + 59627 + 51130) leaves Warwick station for Leamington Spa on what until then had been a sunny evening in September 1984. Bob Belcher.

Newly painted class 116 set TS624 (presumably 51143 + 59615 + 51130) approaching Small Heath with a Birmingham Moor Street to Stratford-upon-Avon train on 22 March 1986. I never felt entirely comfortable in this location if no other photographers were present as there was a bit of a dodgy pub immediately to the left of the road bridge but on this occasion there wasn't an issue because 2 steam-hauled workings were working away from Birmingham... One feature of many of the old 1st generation DMUs now sadly lacking with the new stock was the forward view, or as in this case, rearward view. Here the view out of the rear of class 116 no. 51143 is seen just after passing Lifford West Junction and just before arriving at Bournville on the way from Redditch to Birmingham New Street, 26/Jul/1991. Here the view out of the rear of class 116 no. 51143 is seen just after leaving Northfield on the way from Redditch to Birmingham New Street. Points of note are the unit set number board in the secondman's window, the driver's copy of the 'Mirror' from the outbound journey and, unusually, a second set of driving controls lying on the desk. 26/Jul/1991.
