Running over an hour late at this stage the Monmouthshire Railway Society "Maerdy Gras" railtour formed of 2 x class 117 3-car and a single car 121 DMU is seen at Aberpergwm on April 20, 1985. Taken eight months before the line closed forever in December 1985 this 7-car DMU formation made up of two class 117 sets L407 (51342 + 59494 + 51384) + L413 and class 121 set L121 (55021) are seen at the limit of BR working around the site of Blaengarw station which closed on 9/2/1953. The train was the Monmouthshire Railway Society 'Maerdy Gras' tour on April 20, 1985. The line continued a short distance beyond here to serve Garw colliery and the once famous Ocean colliery but tracks beyond here would be considered to be mineral railway so this train came to a stand at the first set of facing points before reversing. Adrian Nicholls.
With passengers off the train for a photo stop and leg stretch at Onllwyn the crew change ends on the Monmouthshire Railway Society 'Maerdy Gras' railtour on 20/04/85. The train was formed of two class 117 DMU sets L423 & L407 with single car class 121 set L121 sandwiched in the middle. The inclusion of this additional power car worked well on the steeper freight lines into the Western Valleys as previous DMU tours had often struggled with adhesion issues loosing lots of time in the process. When this image was taken the closed Onllwyn station to the rear of the train was still fairly intact with an island platform but it had closed on 15/10/62 with the withdrawal of the Neath to Brecon passenger service. Adrian Nicholls.
