The 1981 BLS Scottish Tour was the Ayrshire Wanderer which ran in two parts. The Sunday tour (30 August) started and finished at Ayr and here we are at Girvan Goods. For some reason we spent ages here, probably due to awaiting a path on the Stranraer line where we were headed next, so I put the time to good use and walked much further away from the train to take my shot. On the second day of the Branch Line Society's "Ayrshire Wanderer" railtour, August 30th 1981, a mixed formation set was used. The leading end here is Class 120 Swindon-built "cross-country" car 51787, the trailer is a similar former buffet car (59685) and the far end is a Metro-Cammell class 101 car (51529). In bottom gear and down to walking pace, a three-car Swindon Class 120 Cross-Country DMU formed of cars W50679, W59291 & W50727 was grinding its way to the summit of the Lickey Incline at Blackwell with a Worcester to Birmingham New Street service on September 5th 1981. These were stylish DMUs with a good internal layout and seats, and window curtains in the second class saloons. Martyn Hilbert.
A Swindon Class 120 three-car 'Cross-Country' DMU formed of cars W51588, W59588 & W51579 (558), was down to walking pace as it was climbing the Lickey Incline with a Worcester to Birmingham New Street service on September 5th 1981. At the time, the set was allocated to Cardiff Canton, but in the following year, 1982, the set was transferred to the North West operating from Newton Heath Depot. Martyn Hilbert.
Complete with its first class saloon, Swindon Class 120 Driving Motor Brake Composite (DMBC) W51578 was leading a Worcester to Birmingham New Street service at Blackwell, grinding its way up the last few yards of the Lickey Incline at almost walking pace on September 5th 1981. Martyn Hilbert.
