Class 123 DMU no. 52087 heading a mixed class 123/124 Trans-Pennine set at Morecambe on 3/Mar/1984. After the cessation of the display of headcodes, most class 123s eventually had the headcode panels removed completely and standard DMU marker lights installed in re-panelled cab front as seen here. They operated some services from the North West to the East Coast in their twilight years. Robert Chilton.

Class 123 52088 is seen at Doncaster on 20.04.1984. This was the other end of a Class 124 Trans-Pennine unit. Andy Cole.
One of the "Swindon Inter-City" class 123 DMU sets is seen in the carriage sidings recess line to the south of Sheffield Midland station on 21/04/84. By this date the units were on borrowed time and the mainstay of there work was Trans Pennine diagrams between Hull / Cleethorpes and Manchester via the Hope Valley route. Adrian Nicholls.
Swindon-built "Inter City" set with E52102 nearest the camera has just arrived at Hull Paragon with a train from Manchester on 30th April 1984. In the background, Trans-Pennine DMU E51958 is at the front of another service over the "Backbone of England". This was the last photo I took of these rather wonderful units, as within a few days of this they were all withdrawn from service. Syd Young.
