About to pass Torside level crossing and box, a Hull Botanic Gardens (BG) based Swindon built class 124/123 hybrid dmu passes by with a Manchester Piccadilly-Hull Paragon service, heading towards Sheffield at 10.55 in dismal weather conditions on the freight only Woodhead route, on a Sunday diversion away from the Hope Valley route. 25th January 1981. A Class 123 Swindon Inter-City set arrives at Hull Paragon with a service from Manchester Piccadilly on 29th May 1978. E52099, complete with lamp and end doors brings up the rear. Also in this view are a Cravens Class 105 2-car set waiting to travel up the Scarborough line, a Metro-Cammell Class 101 unit and a Class 124 Trans-Pennine set. One of the Swindon built Class 123 Inter-City DMUs is seen departing Doncaster for Manchester Piccadilly, c.1980. They joined Class 124 DMUs on services such as this from the late 1970s, working until mass withdrawal of both classes in May 1984, replaced by Class 31/4s. Graeme Phillips Collection.

I have fond memories of this photo. The day before I turned 21 last day of October 1980. Keadby traversing bridge which moves out of the way of the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation and a Class 123 is crossing. I had first come here in the summer of 1973 as a 13 year old Norfolk child boating into Northern England for the first time. Robert Forsythe.
