A view of St Pancras that has since been transformed and this is as now far removed from the current day St Pancras, as the steam-age was back in 1979. With oil soaked track strewn with litter and parcels/mail stock stabled, a Derby Class 127 'Red Triangle' four-car DMU formed of cars M51627 + M59642 + M59589 + M51598 had arrived with a service from Bedford on October 21st 1979. These Rolls-Royce powered Diesel-Hydraulic units were introduced in 1959 and the last well worked and worn examples were finally withdrawn from 'Bed-Pan' workings in 1983. Some cars were reformed as a temporary measure for use between Gospel Oak and Barking until 1984. In 1985, 22 Driving Cars made up into 11 two-car units, were converted to parcels/mail traffic until they were finally withdrawn in 1989. Martyn Hilbert.
