With a cloud of exhaust fumes the luxurious Birmingham Pullman glides out of Snow Hill Station. The train, in spotless Nanking blue and white livery, is led by motor brake second W60097. These trains, built by Metropolitan-Cammell, had a North British/M.A.N. 12cyl 1000bhp engine in each power car, as well as the engine the car had a guards compartment and seating for 18 second class passengers. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith, probably in 1962/63. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

Waiting at Birmingham Snow Hill station is W51102, the car is the leading vehicle of a Gloucester RC&W Cross Country set. The unit is standing by the girders that form the bridge over Great Charles Street, they are still in place today. Waiting in the background is an SLS railtour with Gresley K4 61994 The Great Marquess, it was withdrawn from BR service in December 1961. The railtour that the steam loco is working was 'The Restored Locomotives Cavalcade' The tour started with 3442 (61994) from Snow Hill at 10.30 (returning at 18.43) 3442 took the train to Worcester Shrub. 1420/4555 continued with the train to Alveley Sidings, they returned via Stourbridge Juction and Dudley to Wolverhampton L.L. 1420/4555 then returned to Worcester Shrub Hill where 3442 was waiting to return to Birmingham Snow Hill. In this photograph from June 1959, taken by Peter Shoesmith, a Cravens dmu (class 105) is approaching Whitacre station from the Nuneaton line. The station was little used during the day, here it would seem just the one member of staff and Peter would welcome the train. The station closed March 4th 1968. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

Rain at Taffs Well. The day which had started sullen and grey now lapsed into that fine drizzle that soaks everything. The wet tracks add a little sparkle to Cardiff 116 set C301 (presumably 53084 + 59373 + 53126) as it leaves the station passing the fine platform mounted signal box. The train is the 13.49 Merthyr Tydfil to Penarth service on 16 May 1983. Geoff Dowling.

With a cloud of smoke and a rasp from the exhaust an unknown class 116 pollutes it's way to Four Oaks on 29 March 1986. Birmingham New Street had not an architectural gem since the destruction in the 1960's but it was alive; diesel and electric locomotives were exchanged, through workings came and went and the humble local services wormed their way in between. "You don't know what you got 'till it's gone". Geoff Dowling.

Dudley Port low level looks in a parlous state as a gleaming green 2 car Park Royal diesel multiple unit draws in with a train to Walsall. On the skyline is the large LNWR signal box and the fence of Dudley Port High level station gaunt against the light grey sky. In the grassland to the right a few corrugated iron buildings lie rusting and the abutments of the closed railway only support weeds. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith, 2 August 1963. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

A Class 104 DMU heading for Manchester Victoria is suddenly enveloped in a dense cloud of exhaust from a mixed DMU formation disappearing in the opposite direction. Manchester Exchange, 3 January 1987. Geoff Dowling.

A covering of snow and bright sunshine turns Hall Green station into a Christmas card scene. The class 116 DMU is working a Birmingham Moor Street to Shirley service around late morning time. The station still had the large GWR 'Hall Green' running in boards, the bases of their support columns are still to be seen today, severed at platform level, both embankments are now thickly covered in trees, the right-hand side is particularly bad. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith, circa 1987. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.

108 DMU

A Blue Square Derby Lightweight DMU in Leeds City station. The scaffolding on the left, and the lack of exhaust stains on the overpasses, suggests that this was at the tail end of the station reconstruction. The glimpse of a Met-Camm with no lining - thus in blue livery, and the adjacent Way Out sign in Rail Alphabet - puts this in the British Rail era. Stuart Mackay Collection.
