The vehicles were included in the 1970s refurbishment programme, bringing improvements to passenger (and staff) comfort and a refreshed modern interior. As standard with most classes, vestibules were covered with orange coloured formica and seat moquette was a blue check pattern in second, an orange/brown in first. The floor colours matched with blue lino in second and orange/brown carpet in first. Fluorescent lights replaced the tungsten type.
The toilet was refitted with a plastic / fibreglass sink unit and off-white formica. The heating was upgraded, with the heater intake on the DMBS moved to a grille on the drivers side of the bodyside (involving turning a two-seater 90 degrees). Other external changes saw the two-character route indicator removed and two lower marker lights added. In some cases the top lamp was removed. The exhaust system was upgraded to add additional silencers.
All were refurbished at Doncaster Works, and all 45 remaining sets were treated — of the 49 sets built four power cars 50028/29/34/48 and four trailers 56020/31/46/48 had already been withdrawn.
The white / blue stripe livery was applied until September 1979, to a total of 53 vehicles — 26 power cars and 27 trailer cars. The remaining vehicles 37 vehicles (19 power cars and 18 trailers) were turned out in Blue and Grey.
The photographs below are from the works album titled "Refurbished Class 114/148 D.M.U. Production". The images were taken at Lincoln depot circa August 1977 judging by the brake overhaul dates painted on the solebar. The vehicles are presumed to be the first set refurbished E50018 and E56018, the only set treated by August 1977.

This shows the Smiths heater and Leyland Albion engine on the no.2 (non-drivers) side of the DMBS.
Negative Y2417/12
The new heater intake grille. The intake had previously been beside the heater on the underframe and had been susceptible to drawing in the exhaust fumes from the heater combustion chamber.
Negative Y2417/26
The new heater intake grille and the heater. The square box to the left of the heater contained a filter which could be withdrawn by the handle on the diagonal strip.
Negative Y2417/2
A heater outlet in the drivers compartment on the bulkhead to the passenger saloon.
Negative Y2417/3
A heater outlet behind the drivers chair in the cab. The small (yellow) fire extinguisher tells us this is the DMBS.
Negative Y2417/20
The first class saloon in the DTCL. The reversible seats (the second row) have been retained.
Negative Y2417/22
A heater inlet grille and the orange laminate that was introduced to vestibules with refurbishment.
Negative Y2417/7
Taken in the centre saloon of the DMBS looking to the van (through the sliding door).
Negative Y2417/10
The toilet area of the DTCL. Note the original tungsten lamps retained on the lowered ceiling (above which is the water tank for the toilet).
Negative Y2417/11
Looking into the toilet on the DTCL and the modern sink unit that had been fitted. The silver knob to the left of the sink was for adjusting the water temperature.
Negative Y2417/8
The van area. Then heater outlet is presumably at that height to avoid being blocked by mail bags etc.
The table below shows the Works date and the livery applied for each vehicle. Information supplied by Eddie Knorn extracted from the BR vehicle record cards.
For 56001 the exact date is unknown, it was released by late January 1981.
