These 49 sets were built for the ER Lincolnshire and South Humberside area services. They were the first steel bodied vehicles from Derby, earning them the name 'Derby Heavyweights'.
All were delivered to Lincoln depot where, apart from some sets spending short spells at Darnall and Stratford, they remained for over thirty years.
Vehicles E50000/E56000 which shared the same body design as the 114s are dealt with on their own pages.
All but the last power car were built with two Leyland 150hp engines. These proved underpowered in service and so E50049 was delivered fitted with two of the then new Albion 230hp engines. Soon after, the rest of the power cars were re-engined with the new engines.
In 1987 the remaining sets were transferred to Tyseley where they covered a lot of new ground. Several sets had been converted to Parcels cars, these were all withdrawn by the end of 1990. The passenger fleet was gradually run down, until the last car was withdrawn in June 1992.
