Class 101 DMU at Springburn

9th July 1985

The first generation DMU's were renowned for oil leaks and copious exhaust as Springburn station bares witness with the black sticky oil soaked track and a sky full of smoke. ScotRail class 101 set 101 339 is seen departing with the 17.27 to Cumbernauld despite the station clock proclaiming its "11.10". When taken on 9 July 1985 the station was in effect the terminus of two passenger routes although the DMU is on a through mainline (the Garnkirk & Glasgow line built by the Caledonian Railway). North Clyde electric services to Milngavie via Queen Street Low Level using the bay platforms (the 303 behind the DMU). North of Springburn the "mainline" saw just one passenger train a day each way that being the West Highland Sleeper service which reversed at Cowlairs West Junction. Other than that its primary use was for freight and empty stock workings until the opening of the Cowlairs chord in 1992 which allowed the Cumbernauld trains to run direct into Queen St. Adrian Nicholls.

Class 101 DMU at Falkirk Grahamston

1986

Sc51532 at the front of set 101 339. Taken at Falkirk Grahamston in 1986. Andrew McConnell.

Class 101 DMU at Glasgow Queen Street Station

23rd July 1986

On the afternoon of the 23rd July 1986 a 3 car Class 101 unit sits in Glasgow Queen Street Station awaiting it’s next turn of duty. DMBS SC51467 leads the formation followed by TCL SC59554 with DMCL SC51532 bringing up the rear. It’s very quiet on the Platforms but with the clock above the leading cab showing just after 3pm I’m sure that won’t last very long. The rear 2 vehicles were scrapped by Vic Berry, Leicester SC59554 in October 1988, and SC51532 in July 1990, while the leading car SC51467 met it’s end at Snailwell during September 1990. Bob Woolnough.

Class 101 DMU at Grosmont

circa 1988

Unit 101339, leading car 51467, arrives at Grosmont en route from Whitby to Middlesbrough. This car was based on the Scottish Region for nearly all of its life, moving to Heaton in April 1988 for 15 months before withdrawal, covering for class 143 unreliability and re-engineering. Note the recently re-aligned track, giving the NYMR room to run longer trains clear of BR tracks. Tony Walmsley.

Class 101 DMU at Eaglescliffe, Teesside

11th March 1989

51467 + 51516, then allocated to Heaton (HT) depot, seen at Eaglescliffe, Teesside on 11/03/1989. In March 1989, due to major engineering work between Stockton and Thornaby, Newcastle-Middlesbrough services were being diverted to and terminated at Eaglescliffe (with passengers for Middlesbrough having to catch a Darlington-Saltburn service, of which there were two per hour). This is probably the 13:30 from Newcastle, which would have arrived and terminated at Eaglescliffe at around 14:40. Graeme Phillips Collection.
