A hive of activity in the Met-Camm works at Saltley with Class 101 vehicles in various states on construction. One can be identified on the left, DMBS E51221, listed as new to South Gosforth 16/10/58 which dates this to around late September 1958. Note the vehicles are glossed and lined before the windows are fitted. Three stages of roof construction can be seen, assembly, etch priming the alloy panels, and after applying red-oxide primer. Possibly a hand tinted image, it appeared in a Met-Camm publicity brochure. Metropolitan Cammell.
51221 leads a two-car Class 101 and two-car possibly Class 114 formation on it's way to Norwich at Nuneaton on 27.08.1985. Andy Cole.

Class 101 and 105 vehicles E56085 E51221 E56459 E51429 E56081 and E51485 call at Heaton on the last day of British Rail services, 10/08/1980. Although situated on the East Coast Main Line, it was one of a number of stations closed across Newcastle and North Tyneside at this time, pending development of the Tyneside Metro system. Heaton station wasn't replaced as part of the Metro system, but the area is served by nearby Byker and Chillingham Road stations. Graeme Phillips Collection.
E54396 carries the unusual set number NSE02 when seen in May 1988 in Colchester (North) station. It is presumably paired with 51221 and on Sudbury duties. Stuart Mackay Collection.
