Early morning on the Exe Estuary, as a three-car Class 101 DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second 51246 leading, was departing from Starcross with the 07.42 Exeter St Davids to Paignton service on May 28th 1990. This service called at all stations, and waited in the Down Loop at Dawlish Warren station from 07.59 to 08.04 to enable the 22.30 Glasgow Central to Plymouth service (complete with its sleeping cars) to pass by at 08.02. The 17.05 Fife "Outer Circle" train (Edinburgh to Edinburgh via Dunfermline, Thornton and Kirkcaldy) leaves Waverley station on 27/7/93. It is formed of set 991 (53331/59125/53308), transferred to Haymarket five months previously from Reading, where it had been set L838 with Network South East. Its stay at Haymarket would not last much longer - it was transferred to Longsight the following month and put into departmental use there another month after that.
