Minus its centre trailer coach, Swindon built Cross-Country Class 120 DMU with car M53661 trailing, awaits business to be concluded at Bamber Bridge whilst working a Preston to Colne service on July 24th 1984. At the time the Class 120s were normally on Manchester-Blackpool services and the appearance of one working to East Lancashire was most unusual. Martyn Hilbert.

Almost funicular style, as one Cravens Class 105 arrives at Bamber Bridge with the 13.46 Colne to Preston, another has departed on the 14.30 Preston to Colne working. In this scene from August 23rd 1980, DMBS M50771 passes over the A6 trunk road about to make its last stop on the way to Preston. In the foreground the old L&Y subway is still in existance, note the youngster on a 1970's Chopper pushbike waiting on the pavement! The Newton Heath based Cravens Power-Twin sets, dominated the services along the East Lancashire Line during the 1970's. Martyn Hilbert.

In refurbished DMU white livery, a two-car Class 108 DMU stands at Bamber Bridge with the 13.46 Colne to Preston service on July 30th 1981. The leading car is M52054 complete with its first class saloon behind the cab. Looking at the cab front the car has been in the wars, and a piece of plywood across the former headcode box typifies the state that many of the local DMUs were in around this period. Martyn Hilbert.

Following a heavy shower, the sun just reappears as a Cravens Class 105 2-Car set with M50815 leading, prepares to depart from Bamber Bridge with the 09.46 Colne to Preston service on September 28th 1981. This was a time-honoured scene, the Cravens Power-Twin units dominated the routes in East Lancashire from the mid 1960's after they were transferred from the East Midlands where they had worked as three-car sets with a centre trailer coach. Martyn Hilbert.

Class 100 Gloucester 53355 and Cravens Class 105 53812 were the last two asbestos free types of their respective classes in service, and both were formed into a two-car set for their last period of operation. On August 11th 1984 the unit was departing from Bamber Bridge whilst working a Colne to Preston service. Class 40 40118 was in the adjacent loop awaiting to reverse an engineers train into the nearby DCE sidings at Brownedge. When finally withdrawn in 1988 53355/53812 were destined for the NRM at York, but whilst in storage at Crewe both cars were vandalised beyond repair and were subsequently scrapped by Vic Berry at Leicester. Martyn Hilbert.

On a bright Winter day, A Cravens Class 105 power-twin with Driving Motor Composite Lavatory M50801 at the rear, was stood at Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on January 27th 1979. On that cold day that Cravens would have no doubt been warm on the inside, complete with its oily/diesel smell aroma. What price now a ride to Colne in first class with a view of the line through the rear cab? Martyn Hilbert.

Ex-Eastern Region Cravens Class 105 power/trailer two-car DMU with DMBS M50389 trailing, was passing over the A6 trunk road as it departed from Bamber Bridge with the 14.30 Preston to Colne service on May 29th 1982. The bridge is the far distance spanning the East Lancashire line has a historic claim to fame - it was the first Motorway bridge to span a railway in the UK, the first section of Motorway (The 8.25 mile Preston Bypass and the first part of the M6) opening in December 1958. Unfortunately the original red brick bridge visible here was radically altered in the 1990's when the M6 was widened. Martyn Hilbert.

Passengers await the arrival of the 13.46 Colne to Preston service at Bamber Bridge on July 30th 1981. With both cars in refurbished white with blue stripe livery, Driving Motor Composite M52054 was the leading car. Just visible is the tail end of Class 104 M50464 underway in the opposite direction with the 14.30 Preston to Colne service. Martyn Hilbert.

Bringing up the rear of a well-loaded four-car Preston to Colne service, Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin Driving Composite Lavatory car M50804 was stood at Bamber Bridge on May 13th 1981. A familiar daily sight along the East Lancashire line from the late 1960's, the then (1981) well-worn Newton Heath fleet of power-twins would shortly have started to be withdrawn from service. The local track gang had their yellow liveried BMC crew bus parked in the station car park. Martyn Hilbert.
Vehicle: 53944
A Class 108 two-car DMU with Driving Motor Brake Second M53944 at the rear, was stood at Bamber Bridge with a Preston to Colne service on November 20th 1983. In the distance is the bridge constructed in red brick, that takes the M6 Motorway across the East Lancashire route. The structure was the first Motorway over Railway bridge in the UK, this section of the M6 (The 8 mile Preston By-Pass) between Bamber Bridge and Broughton, opened in December 1958. Unfortunately the original brick bridge was encased by new structures on both sides when this section of the M6 was widened in the 1990's. Martyn Hilbert.

A wide view of Bamber Bridge with a Newton Heath Cravens Class 105 Power-Twin, formed of cars M50804 & M50765, stood with a Colne to Preston service on May 18th 1981. The former Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway stone built waiting room (complete with 'scar' on the West end where the Gents was once located), was still standing on the Blackburn bound platform. The opposite platform was still low-height, and included some wooden steps as access to the doors of DMU's for those whose mobility was not great. Martyn Hilbert.

Having just passed under the M6 Motorway, A Class 104/108 combo was approaching Bamber Bridge with a Colne to Preston service on April 10th 1982. The leading BRCW Class 104 set was formed of Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M50467 & Driving Motor Composite Lavatory (DMCL) M50519. Both sets were complete with their first class saloons. Martyn Hilbert.

With one car in Blue/Grey and the other two in Rail Blue, Class 110 three-car 'Calder Valley' set, with Driving Motor Brake Composite E51811 leading, was passing Bamber Bridge with the daily Blackpool North to Leeds working on June 29th 1981. At the time this service from Leeds to Blackpool and back was the only regular timetabled passenger train to use the Copy Pit route on Monday to Friday, and brought the non-too common sight of a 'Calder Valley' DMU to Preston and the Fylde Coast. Martyn Hilbert.
Vehicle: 53465
Having been on a Preston to Colne service, a two-car Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53465 & M53531 had been placed in the District Civil Engineers Sidings at Brownedge, just to the West of Bamber Bridge on June 22nd 1985. One of the wheelsets was located in a temporary skate, and was awaiting attention. The DMU is sat close to what was once Bamber Bridge Junction, and the 'road' alongside the 104 is on the site of the 1850 Preston Extension that ran from Bamber Bridge to Preston EL, via Todd Lane Junction that was abandoned in 1972. The unit is stabled on what had once been a loop between Brownedge Crossing and Bamber Bridge Junction. Dominating the skyline on the right of this scene is the former Bamber Bridge Spinning Company Mill complex. Martyn Hilbert.
