Class 104 DMBS M50464 in Manchester Victoria station, date unknown. Paul Redmond.
Class 104s cross at Shaw station circa 1980. The vehicle on the right looks like it could be 50464. Richard Greenwood.
Class 104 DMBS M50464 was at the rear of the 14.30 Preston to Colne service departing from Bamber Bridge on July 30th 1981. Intending passengers garner at the subway entrance on the Preston bound platform ready to board the class 108 approaching with a Colne to Preston service. Martyn Hilbert.
A Class 104 three-car DMU, with Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M53464 leading, was passing Narrow Lane Crossing at Midge Hall with a Preston to Ormskirk service on September 3rd 1985. A blue/grey centre trailer car (TSL) had been added to the set. Martyn Hilbert.
Looking south at track level as a 3 car BRC&W class 104 dmu headed by car SC53464 (presumably with 59168 + Class 108 52059) heads north across the Forth Bridge, which spans the Firth of Forth in Scotland, the bridge which links Queensferry and Inverkeithing and is 8,296 feet long. 8th July 1987. Andrew J Crowther.

From Birmingham to Bathgate 2. Services restarted from Edinburgh to Bathgate in 1986 and used a variety of worn out DMUs shuttling to and from a new single platform terminus station built in the former goods yard. In August 1987 we see BRCW class 104 DMU 53464 still wearing its M prefix following its transfer from Newton Heath 6 months earlier. It was running with blue / grey centre car 59168. This station closed in 2010 when the through route to Airdrie was reopened and electrified and a new station constructed nearby. Murray Liston.

BRCW from Bathgate. In August 1987 we see BRCW class 104 DMU 53464 still wearing its M prefix following its transfer from Newton Heath 6 months earlier. It is seen leaving Haymarket on a Bathgate to Edinburgh working, running with blue / grey centre car 59168. Murray Liston.

In August 1987 we see BRCW class 104 DMU 53464 still wearing its M prefix following its transfer from Newton Heath 6 months earlier. It is seen passing the erstwhile Haymarket Coal Yard on an Edinburgh to Bathgate working, running with blue / grey centre car 59168 and class 108 M52059. Murray Liston.
One of the former LMR BRCW class 104 DMUs is seen during a brief layover at the west end of Edinburgh Waverley in August 1987. Still wearing its M prefix since transfer from Newton Heath 6 months previously. It is seen at the unique double sided Platform 18 commonly used for services to Dunfermline, Cowdenbeath and Cardenden. Murray Liston.
Eastfield's BRCW set 456 (53464 + 59168 + 53517) arrives at Waverley in the spring of 1988. It seems to have drawn a crowd of young admirers in the background, a spot where I was first introduced to (green) DMUs and locos moving around here at a similar age. This long-time Manchester set came up to Scotland in 1987 but lasted less than 2 years before living out a final year of service at Newton Heath. Murray Liston.
53464 + 59168 + (53517), working the 17:28 Cowdenbeath - Edinburgh on June 10, 1988, pass a Class 101 centre car stabled in the east end of Haymarket depot. Hamish Stevenson.
53464 + 59168 + 53517 (set 456) is working with a Class 101 on the 17:10 Edinburgh - Dunblane service on August 24, 1988, seen just after departure in Princes Street Gardens. Hamish Stevenson.

Passengers await the arrival of the 13.46 Colne to Preston service at Bamber Bridge on July 30th 1981. With both cars in refurbished white with blue stripe livery, Driving Motor Composite M52054 was the leading car. Just visible is the tail end of Class 104 M50464 underway in the opposite direction with the 14.30 Preston to Colne service. Martyn Hilbert.
Class 104 DMU car 53524, the last to carry a white stripe signifying its modified suspension, is seen coupled to 53464 passing Appley Locks between Appley Bridge and Parbold on the 21st August 1984. The large house on the hill is Parbold Hall, then home of Sir Peter Moores, son of Sir John Moores the founder of Littlewoods Pools. S Gaskell.
One of the Newton Heath allocated 'White Stripe' with red buffer beam class 104 BRC&W dmu's DMCL M53524 with M53464, stand at platform 14 at a now totally unrecognizable Manchester Victoria. These units with a White Strip down the body side indicated that they had modified suspension for fast running on express services to Blackpool, which probably meant very little when i took this with the influx of class 150 'Sprinter' new builds. 15th February 1985. Andrew J Crowther.
A three-car Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53517, M59168 & M53464 was stood on the Down Fast at Leyland station with a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service on May 16th 1986. Unusually, the centre trailer car (M59168) was in blue/grey livery. M53517 has survived into preservation and is currently at the East Lancashire Railway. Martyn Hilbert.
With its centre trailer car in blue/grey, a three-car BRCW Class 104 DMU formed of cars M53517, M59168 & M53464 was stood on the Up Fast at Leyland station with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on October 11th 1986. Of the three individual cars, M53464 & M59168 were eventually scrapped, with M53517 surviving into preservation. Martyn Hilbert.

Hybrid set 456 departs north from North Queensferry on 14 August 1987, formed of one Class 108 vehicle M52059 and two Class 104 vehicles M59168 + M53464. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Class 104 unit no. 456 stands at Glasgow Queen Street, 53517 closest presumably with 59168 + 53464. The Garden Festival signage at the end of the platform dates this to 1988. Ian Docwra.
Class 104 DMU set 456 (presumably 53464 + 59168 + 53517) arrives into Dunblane station while a Class 107 sits in the southbound platform. Circa spring 1988. Brian Ward.
Class 104 DMU set 456 (presumably 53464 + 59168 + 53517) about to arrive into Bridge of Allan station with a southbound service circa spring 1988. Brian Ward.
Class 104 DMU set 456 (presumably 53464 + 59168 + 53517) in platform 3 of Stirling station circa spring 1988. Brian Ward.
New and Old in Waverley. In March 1988 set 456 is seen with 53517, 59168 and 53464 at platform 15 with a Bathgate service, while a newfangled Sprinter sits on platform 17. Murray Liston.
Golden light at Newton Heath Depot at dawn as the sun illuminated first generation DMU cars stabled on September 15th 1990. In the foreground are withdrawn Class 104s, M53421 & M53464, with out-of-service M53493 & M53444 on a parallel siding, the units being separated by a 20 Ton Brake Van. In the left background is a split 2-Car Class 101, the bodyside damage suggests the DMBS is 51227. Also present were two Class 116 Suburban DMU cars, 53839 & 53842. Martyn Hilbert.
