 DMU

1979

Vehicle: 50520

Two three-car Class 104s arriving into Leyland station in 1979. The front car seems to be M50520. John Law.

 DMU

20th June 1987

Vehicle: 53487

M53487 + M53421 are seen in Leyland station during their stop with the 06:20 Preston - Liverpool Lime Street service on June 20, 1987. Hamish Stevenson.

 DMU

27th October 1984

Vehicle: 51793

One of the stylish well-appointed Swindon Class 120 Cross-Country 3-car DMUs with DMSL M51793 at the rear of a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service at Leyland on October 27th 1984, coupled to a Class 104. The batch of Class 120s were allocated to Newton Heath and saw these units on Manchester-Blackpool/Southport duties as a stop-gap until new Class 142s/150s came on stream in 1985/86. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

1st May 1986

Vehicle: 53507   Set: BX482

On the bright morning of May 1st 1986, A Class 104 Three-Car DMU (Buxton set BX482) with 53507 leading, was stood on the up fast at Leyland with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria Service. This was a familiar time-honoured scene, the class 104's dominating these services during the 1970's & early 1980's, until ousted by Class 120 Cross-Country units for a short time, prior to the arrival of new Class 150/2 Sprinter Units in 1987/88. Note the unusual application of yellow around the destination blind. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

August 1977

Vehicle: 50479

Late on a warm Summer evening in August 1977, with the oil tail lamp glowing in the dusk, a six-car Class 104 formation was stood on the down fast at Leyland station. DMBS M50479 was bringing up the rear of a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service, the large Newton Heath allocated fleet of 104's were the mainstay of these workings in the 1970's. On the grass bank alongside the up fast are a group of spotters - plenty of loco-hauled action to keep them entertained in those days. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

4th November 1986

Vehicle: 53327

A Metro-Cammell Class 101 three-car DMU stands on the Up Fast at Leyland as it calls with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on November 4th 1986. DMBS M53327 is leading. The 101s were never common around Preston, but several sets appeared at Newton Heath during the mid 1980's as a stop-gap between the worn-out Class 104's & 120's and the introduction of the new Class 150 Sprinter fleet. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

25th August 1984

Vehicle: 53702

A hybrid Class 120 3-Car set with Driving Motor Brake Second M53702 leading, was departing from Leyland with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on August 25th 1984. The centre trailer coach was from a Class 110 Calder Valley set. A number of the 110 sets had been reformed to 2-Car units in 1982, making the centre cars spare. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

16th May 1986

Vehicle: 53308

With DMBS M53308 bringing up the rear of a 3-Car Class 101 DMU set (the other vehicles are presumably 59125 + 53331), the tidy-looking unit was stood on the Down Slow at Leyland station whilst forming a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service on May 16th 1986. The 101 was one of several sets transferred in haste to Newton Heath Depot in the interim period following the introduction of unreliable new Class 142's many of which had been stored pending modifications, and with the demise of the Class 104 and Class 120 fleet, operational sets of various classes still extant from across the BR network stood-in until sufficient quantities of the BREL Class 150/2 Sprinter fleet were delivered from BREL York in 1987/88. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

25th August 1984

Vehicle: 53812

The Newton Heath allocated Gloucester/Cravens Class 100/105 twin set, formed of cars 53355 & 53812 and the last operational cars of their respective types that were asbestos free, were tagged onto the rear of a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service seen calling at Leyland on August 25th 1984. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

22nd April 1986

Vehicle: 53680

Swindon Cross-Country Class 120 DMU's meet at Leyland on April 22nd 1986. On the left M53680 was bringing up the rear of a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service, whilst arriving on the right (complete with its slam-doors opening before it had stopped!) was M51575 with a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool South through service. This was the brief period when the large three-car BRCW Class 104 fleet based at Newton Heath had been sidelined, and due to the introduction of the new Class 150/1 Sprinter fleet at Derby Etches Park, the surplus well-worn but not quite life expired Class 120's were moved to pastures new at Newton Heath. The 120's would fade-away as deliveries of new Class 150/2 Sprinters began in earnest during 1987. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

1st May 1986

Vehicle: 52041

A Class 108/101 hybrid three-car DMU with Class 108 Driving Motor Car M52041 leading was stood on the Up Fast at Leyland with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on May 1st 1986. The Class 101 Trailer Second car is probably 59540. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

22nd April 1986

Vehicle: 51583

In the brief period when following the demise of the Manchester-Blackpool Class 104 'White-Liners', the introduction of new Class 142's that were problematic, and before the introduction of new Class 150/2 Sprinters, the gap on many Blackpool to Manchester Victoria services was filled by Swindon-built Class 120 Cross-Country DMU sets that had initially been made redundant by new Class 150/1 Sprinters introduced at Derby Etches Park. The well-worn but stylish and well-appointed Class 120's were allocated to Newton Heath and became a familiar sight along the busy route to the Fylde Coast. On April 22nd 1986, DMSL M51583 was bringing up the rear of an early evening Manchester Victoria to Blackpool South through service. This working would stable overnight at Blackpool South and work back to Manchester the following (early) morning. For many years in the mid to late 1970's this service utilised a Class 124 Trans-Pennine DMU. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

16th May 1986

Vehicle: 53333

A three-car Class 101 Metro-Cam DMU with Driving Motor Second Lavatory (ex Composite), 53333 leading, was stood on the Up Fast at Leyland station with an early morning Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on May 16th 1986. Running without a destination blind in place, this was another hastily acquired set to cover a shortage of units following the troubles of the new Class 142 Pacer fleet the introduction of which had seen the demise of much of the areas first generation fleet of DMU sets in 1985/86. When the Pacer fleet started to be sidelined/stored due to numerous technical issues and poor-design faults, still serviceable DMU sets appeared at Newton Heath that were once unfamiliar on local services across the North West. This was a short term fix until the new Class 150/2 Sprinters appeared in sufficient quantities. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

16th May 1986

Vehicle: 53556

In time-honoured fashion, a three-car Class 104 DMU, with Driving Motor Second Lavatory M53556 at the rear, was stood on the Down Fast at Leyland station with a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service on May 16th 1986. M53556 was originally fitted with a First Class saloon, located behind the cab, but by 1986 had been downgraded to Second, although the better seats remained. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

16th May 1986

Vehicle: 53314

A Metro-Cammell Class 101 three-car set, with Driving Motor Brake Second M53314 at the rear, was stood at Leyland with a Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service on May 16th 1986. The unfamiliar sight of a Class 101 was due to the sidelining of almost new Class 142 Pacers, following reliability issues, causing the transfer of still extant and serviceable first generation DMU's to Newton Heath depot, garnered in a hurry from across the BR network. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

27th October 1984

Vehicle: 53712

A six-car Swindon Cross-Country Class 120 DMU, with Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M53712 leading, was passing through Leyland station on the Up Slow with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on October 27th 1984. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

28th December 1985

Vehicle: 53655

A Swindon Class 120 three-car 'Cross-Country' DMU with Driving Motor Second Lavatory (DMSL) M53655 leading, was passing through Leyland station on the Up Slow with a Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on December 28th 1985. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

16th August 1988

Vehicle: 53974   Set: N604

A well filled two-car Class 108 (Newton Heath Depot set N604), formed of cars M53974 & M54503 was stood on the Up Slow at Leyland station with a tea-time Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service on August 16th 1988. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

28th December 1985

Vehicle: 53735

On a bright Winter afternoon, a Swindon Cross Country Class 120 Driving Motor Brake Second (ex Composite downgraded), M53735 was bringing up the rear of a six-car Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North service stood on the Down Slow at Leyland station on December 28th 1985. Running as part of a three car set, the centre trailer car was a Class 101 Metro-Cam M59528, whilst the other leading Class 120 car was M53680. The unit was eventually withdrawn from Newton Heath depot in May 1986 and scrapped by Berry's of Leicester. The unit is stood on the original low-height North Union Railway stone platform that survived on the Down Slow at Leyland. This platform is believed to be the oldest in the same position along the entire WCML that is still in use. Martyn Hilbert.

 DMU

23rd May 1986

Vehicle: 51928

A hybrid three-car DMU with Class 108 Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) M51928 leading, had a Class 101 Trailer Car (presumably 59530) inserted between it and the rear Class 108 car (presumably 52044), forming a well-filled Blackpool North to Manchester Victoria service at Leyland on May 23rd 1986. Martyn Hilbert.
