In August 1969 I read that the Great Central & Midland Railway branch line from New Mills to Hayfield in Derbyshire was going to be closed shortly so took time off from geological mapping near Hartington on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border & travelled up by train from Buxton. This diesel multiple unit took me from New Mills and here it stands in Hayfield station after arrival. Hayfield station building was intact & quite a few passengers still used the service. So why close it? Allegedly to save maintenance of the tunnel just outside New Mills station. However, after closure the tunnel remained open because it was used to stable the dmu before returning to Manchester. So again why close it? Pete LG99.
A class 100 Gloucester twin car d.m.u. after arrival at the old North Berwick station from Edinburgh Waverley on 7 August 1969. Since January of the previous year the North Berwick branch had been a long siding from Drem. The branch was then under threat of closure. It didn't and is now electrified with a frequent service to Edinburgh. All that you see here is gone and the long siding shortened by a couple of hundred yards. Gordon Thomson.
A mixed livery Gloucester DMU arrives into Longniddry station on 16 August 1969. With Edinburgh Waverley on the destination blind, this is likely a service from North Berwick. Stuart Mackay Collection.
A GRC&W twin set seen at Longniddry with an Edinburgh Waverley - North Berwick service on 23 August 1969. The DMBS (which seems to carry set number 89) has 'LW' on the blue square instead of the more usual 'G' for these Scottish sets. The DTCL - in Rail Blue livery - has yellow cab doors. Stuart Mackay Collection.

The fleet of 40 Class 100 2-car units were built by Gloucester RC&W Co in two batches for local services around Edinburgh (although eleven units were initially delivered to the Manchester area for a short period). Changing traffic patterns in the late 1960s saw them transferred to Norwich Thorpe depot for local services in East Anglia, where they remained until the end of the 1970s - regarded as non-standard, withdrawals started relatively early, though the final car lasted in passenger service until 1988. This tatty unit had evidently been transferred to Norwich by the time of this shot, which appears to be the early 1970s. The window bars suggest it has spent time in the North East, meaning this is probably 56099. Graeme Phillips Collection.
