To the left of the unit is Bournville signal box, as well as the main lines it controlled the entrance to Lifford Goods canal branch which followed the line of the canal. 100 DMU

circa 1962

A Gloucester RC&W DMU draws to a halt in Aston Station, Birmingham with a Walsall bound service. The picture dates circa 1962 as the first few signs of catenary are present, electrification would see the end of the signals and timber buildings which were replaced by the more basic structure we have today. The booking office is at ground level on Lichfield Road, the platforms being reached by steep flights of steps. Aston is an important junction, it is the point where the line to Lichfield diverges from the direct line to Walsall and Wolverhampton. To the right on the building end is a poster for the Cinéphone cinema, this stood on Bristol Road and specialised in "adult" films although nothing that cannot be seen on television today. The passengers are a very mixed crowd that range from smartly dressed businessmen to 'Compo' in the long mack and wellies, probably had a morning on his allotment. Image taken by Peter Shoesmith. Geoff Dowling and John Whitehouse Collection.
