In the sidings at Doncaster on 7 April 1973 can be seen a Class 100 DTC with the cab removed, probably 56098 which was withdrawn the previous month and had been noted in Doncaster with severe cab damage. Beside it is another Gloucester-built vehicle, LMR Class 128 DMPV M55987, withdrawn in July 1971. Mr Deltic.
The fleet of 40 Class 100 2-car units were built by Gloucester RC&W Co in two batches for local services around Edinburgh (although eleven units were initially delivered to the Manchester area for a short period). Changing traffic patterns in the late 1960s saw them transferred to Norwich Thorpe depot for local services in East Anglia, where they remained until the end of the 1970s - regarded as non-standard, withdrawals started relatively early, though the final car lasted in passenger service until 1988. This tatty unit had evidently been transferred to Norwich by the time of this shot, which appears to be the early 1970s. The window bars suggest it has spent time in the North East, meaning this is probably 56099. Graeme Phillips Collection.

The "FRI 12" notice in the cab window refers to the unit's next exam date, implying that the set would return to Norwich Crown Point by the end of the day. Jeremy Chapter.
E56100, at Peterborough on 3/8/76 apparently heading for Norwich. Signs in the cab windows proclaim it's set 45 (the other vehicle appears to be a Cravens). David Underwood adds: "'4 WED' in the windscreen reflects the method by which Norwich Depot advised when the unit was next due for maintenance at Norwich, i.e. the unit had to be placed on a diagram that finished at Norwich on that day." Ian Francis.
