Regional Railways Metropolitan-Cammell unit 101678 (53746-51210) shortly after leaving Ashley forming an afternoon Manchester Piccadilly to Chester service on 22 July 1999. Christmas Eve 2003 saw the end of the final Class 101 Metro-Cammell DMU’s in service with First North Western, up until that time having had regular duties on the Manchester Piccadilly – Marple corridor. Following a period of storage at Shoeburyness, unit 101678 eventually found a home in preservation on the Wensleydale Railway. Long before the route of HS2 was proposed, the DMU is precisely in the location where the Phase 2 route of the line to Manchester will eventually cross! Gordon Edgar.

A break at Barrhead. By 1999 time was running out for first generation DMUs in Scotland, with a handful of Met Camm power twin sets operating from Corkerhill depot on some Glasgow suburban services. Taken on 1st August that year, when these had only a few months to go before being replaced by Sprinters. 101688 (51431 + 51501) are seen during a runround at Barrhead on 1st August 1999, with the guard taking a break in the sunshine. This unit was not so lucky, being completely destroyed by fire near Mossend Yard on 17th November that year. Murray Liston.

Taken on 1st August that year, when these had only a few months to go before being replaced by Sprinters. 101692 (53170 + 53253) was repainted into a unique blue livery in 1996 and is seen at Pollokshaws West on a Glasgow Central to Barrhead service on 1st August 1999. Following withdrawal from Longsight, this set was preserved. Passing in the distance is 101688 (51431 + 51501) which was destroyed in a blaze near Mossend on 17th November of that year.
