Heads are out on this Class 101 as it arrives into Tulloch station on 30 March 1974. This was an Oban - Mallaig DMU journey that had connected with a sleeper special from Leeds. On the return journey the unit overheated as it climbed by Loch Treig after leaving Tulloch, and it limped back to the station which is when this photo was taken. The passengers would transfer to the afternoon Fort William - Glasgow seen in the waiting, then by coach back to Oban. Stuart Mackay Collection.
Yes, a 1st generation set did reach Mallaig! Nothing is known as to why it was there on Saturday 30th March 1974: I wondered if it was a wedding given how the people on the platform are dressed. If it’s a railtour, Six Bells Junction has nothing that corresponds to it. Any suggestions as to what it was doing there are most welcome! Photo uploaded by the kind permission of Tim Rushton, whose wife’s late uncle E. Springer took it. E. Springer.
