Set: LT304

A rather dark photograph taken on a rather dark January day at 16.55hrs and certainly on a dark day for the railways in the area too. A Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon built class 104 and a Derby class 108 dmu stands at Hayfield station, situated at the end of the 2.5 mile branch from New Mills Central on the penultimate day of railway operations, 3rd January 1970. The track bed is now know as the popular Sett Valley Trail. Andrew J Crowther.

February 1970

A dmu arrives at Buxton from Manchester in February 1970 on the LNWR route via Stockport Edgeley & Chapel-en-le-Frith. The white roof was a Buxton depot trademark. The tracks in the foreground led from the station to a junction on the line to Ashbourne by this time cut back to limestone quarries south of Buxton. The train is passing under the bridge which carried the branch line into the Up sidings. Pete LG99.

It also carries a set number in the cab number - 457 - possibly BX457. John McIntyre.

104 DMU

circa 1970

A 4-car class 104 approaching Woodlesford station heading towards Leeds circa 1970. The vehicle numbers appear to have been covered up by the flowery decorations. The Cravens class 105 page refers to a two-car Cravens and a 3-car Birmingham that were decorated in this way to publicise a Ken Dodd show that was on at Scarborough during the summer 1970 season. There was clearly a 4-car Birmingham class 104 that was similarly adorned. Les Plumb.

On a rather dull autumn Saturday (27 November 1970), a 3-car dmu (Class 104 DMSL E50564 leading with a Class 104 TBLS and a Class 111 DMCL) leaves the turnback siding just north of Tottenham Hale station to form the 12.26 to North Woolwich via Stratford (Low Level). There still seems to be some activity in the goods yard on the left, where a coal wagon has been emptied. Tom Burnham.
