104 DMU

26th August 1979

BRCW Class 104 DMU's were Sunday resting stabled at Buxton station on August 26th 1979. The nearest three-car set was formed of cars M50482, M59138 & M50460. Buxton Depot had a sizeable allocation of 104's from the late 1950's until the early 1980's. The leading car in this view, Driving Motor Second Lavatory (DMSL) M50482, eventually ended its working life at Preston on January 19th 1986, when working as a two-car set formed of M53482 & M53433, it had a head-on collision with Class 47 47111 just South of Preston station following braking problems. 53482 lanquished for some time in Dock Street Sidings at Preston covered over with a tarpaulin until it was scrapped on-site. The interior of the main line part of Manchester Victoria really suited black & white photography. In this picture dated 26 June 1984 a class 104 (M53482 closest - or maybe it was still M50482 at this point) is waiting to leave for Blackburn as 40091 passes on the though road with an oil train from Stanlow to Leeds. The class 25, 25307, is waiting to give the class 40's train some banking assistance up the stiff climb to Miles Platting. Peter Tandy.

104 DMU

25th June 1985

Weary commuters are carried home on the 17.19 Preston to Ormskirk service, formed of a 2-Car Class 104, with MBS M53482 leading on June 25th 1985. It has just passed Midge Hall and the driver will have collected the single line token for the section to Rufford. During this period the former main line saw three different DMU sets working evening peak-time services along the line, in the days when the passing loop was fully utilised at Rufford. This vehicle met its demise following a serious collision with Class 47 47111 at Preston on January 18th 1986 while returning from Carlisle to Accrington with a football special, when brake failure caused the unit to run through a red signal and into the path of the 47 was stood at the South side of Preston Station. The 47 was subsequently scrapped, whilst the badly damaged M53482 was taken to Dock Street Sidings at Preston. The DMU car spent a considerable time there, sheeted over, before it was scrapped on site. Martyn Hilbert.

104 DMU

24th January 1986

Looking rather sorry for its self with the driving end sheeted over, Class 104 Driving Motor Second Lavatory M53482 was awaiting its fate in one of the sidings at Dock Street, adjacent to the BR Preston Divisional office block (Ladywell House) on January 24th 1986. M53482 had been paired with car M53433, and on the 18th January 1986 the DMU was involved in a head-on collision at Preston, when on a returning football excursion from Carlisle to Accrington, the unit suffered brake failure and collided with Class 47 47111. No one was killed, but 44 passengers were injured. The car lanquished at Preston for some considerable time awaiting the outcome of the subsequent enquiry into the incident, and was later scrapped where it stood. Martyn Hilbert.
